Default Dexron V1 trans fluid

I have a 95 with auto. I had bought some cases many years ago of Dexron 3 or 4. I'm running out of this (Castrol brand) and wanted to know if this new formula Dexron V1 is compatible with the old Castrol 3 or 4 before I purchase the trans fluid.
Thank you

That gets argued/discussed a good bit. It's like any lubrication discussion. I have a DexronIII vehicle and I went to the Castrol/Allison TranSynd which is a DexIII Allison spec.

I can't/won't argue or discuss it but when the Dex/Merc was becoming the trend and I ran out of DexIII I went to the TranSynd. I've no regrets. I would use the DexVI vs. the Dex/Merc product if that were my only choice.

You should be able to use the new Dexron 6 ATF fluid with no problems. That fluid is suitable for use in auto transmissions that had used Dexron III.

If you are planning a trans service, I would do a complete flush and use only one fluid type or the other, not a mix of both types.

How frequently do you do a dump/filter? Current miles? Ever had a filter?

Did it about 8000 miles ago but many years. It is a pain due to the X brace (convertible)

Yes it is and I understand the "suction service". I've a friend that doesn't have a C4 'vert and still does "suction services" more frequently than dump/filter. I added a drain plug to my 4T65E

The drain is the way to go but I'm always afraid of leaks. My Japanese cars always had the drain plug and was very easy for me. I wish we had factory drain plugs

Typical fluid Shelf life is 5 year, take in mind it when you are going to replace your trans fluid

I called Castrol today. The shelf life of trans fluid is 2 years according to them. I was very surprised at their answer

Once I've mailed to Mobil about engine oil, they me 5 y for engine oil, 1 y once unsealed.

Even less for trans fluid, as castrol said.

i don't know if oil producer say this in order to sell their products, or is it true.

The only thing I can say you is that I've a Mobil 1 5w30 bottle unsealed here and after one year oil has a different smell and its dye turned from dark Amber to a light Amber.

I've had my 93 for a year now. The trans fluid was very oxidized when I got it but not burned.
I was going to use M1, but went with Maxlife Full Synthetic. I've used this for years in all my cars with good results. I did a cooling line flush with a new filter. I'll probably do a fill tube drain and add next year. My wife's 2001 is up for service this spring and ill probably do the same they. Still run M1 engine oil and diff fluid.

I don't understand this either but Castrol said their recommended shelf life is 2 years. The auto supply store did not even know this. I have been always using Castrol in my Vette.
