88 Convertable VIN question

88 Convertable VIN question
A friend of mine posted this in another forum.. and i know you guy would be able to answer or direct him accordingly..

We've recently purchased a 1988 Corvette Convertible. It was exported from California to Japan, and then from Japan to Australia, where it was converted to right hand drive. However, after comparing VIN's the car seems to have the wrong VIN! The VIN on the chassis is: 1G1YY3185J5109651. However, on the records we have the 9th digit, which is a 5 on the chassis VIN should actually be a 2! Anyone know what went wrong here?
