Default Hurst T handle

New member here. I am picking up my '93 Torch Red coupe on Saturday and one of the things I want to do is replace my stock gear shift **** with a Hurst T handle. I have one on my Challenger and really like the feel. My question is, is there something special I will have to do to get the old **** off? Also, I'm assuming the Hurst Universal handle will fit on the shifter. Thanks for any help.

I replaced the stock shifter **** on my 96 several years ago. If I recall correctly you pry the shift pattern piece out with a flat blade screwdriver and remove the metal wedge that holds it in place. I replaced it with a white Hurst round ****. I think the T handle will fit as long as the threads match.

I went with the white **** as well, kind of old school.

The hard part is getting that little "wedge" out that is under the shift pattern cap. It keeps the **** from rotating and unscrewing itself. Mine was pressed in there really tight and I had to put a vice-grip on it and tap UP on the edge of the vice-grip with a small hammer. I heard a story of a guy pulling up really hard on his, and when it finally released, he put his elbow into the tinted roof and cracked it! So be careful if it is in there tight.

OP - I don't know that I've ever seen a T-Handle that was a "direct fit" for the ZF shifter. You need to shop for a 9/16 - 18 for "direct fit". I've a black Hurst **** in the car and a white still in the box.

Most of the after-market ***** are smaller than the OE Hurst that some of us are familiar with.

If you saw something advertised for a C5 that would also be 9/16 - 18 but if it had a "pattern" on it of course incorrect.

Good luck shopping.

You may contact this guy and see if he makes one without the ZR-1

I bought a Hurst t-handle for my C5 a year ago from a guy on ebay that must buy blanks, and machine them to fit anything, at the right angle needed for the shape of the lever. Mine was made to fit 9/16-18 straight shaft, came with a required locknut, says Hurst on the top, fits, and works perfect. I think it was like $35.
