Hi guys I have an 85 that I was gonna do an ac delete in because it doesn't work and I would rather roll down the windows anyway. Plus I love a clean engine look which will also be a lot easier to work on. Anyways, what all is involved? I know removing the compressor, condenser and all the lines. I was gonna buy an ac compressor delete pulley from rock auto so I can use the same belt (right?) I was curious about all the stuff on the firewall. What all is involved with removing all that? Also what should I use to cover up the hole that it's gonna leave? Just fabricate a cover out of some sheet metal?
You can remove the compressor using the ac delete pulley and also remove all the hoses, condenser, evaporator, etc. However, the box that the evaporator is in also has the fan. If you don't care about losing the fan, I think you can remove it all and make a flat plate to cover the hole. If you want to keep the blower fan, the fabbing will be a bit more involved since the fan sits outboard of the evap.
I just deleted my A/C and air pump. In my build thread (DMITTZ's Corvette build) I showed how I built an A/C delete heater box that keeps the stock fan. I haven't posted how I did the serpentine assembly yet so I'll try to explain what I did:
I wanted the most simple clean look so I got rid of the the A/C compressor and bracket as well as the tensioner, I got rid of the Air pump.
next I switched the water pump for a regular rotation short style chevrolet water pump. (stock pump is reverse rotation). In order to use the stock pulley I made a small spacer to move the pulley out like 1/8in so It would line up with the other pulleys.
I then bought a threaded rod with heim joints on each end that connects from the top of the water pump to the Alternator and I used it to tension the belt.
then buy a 56inch belt and run it under the crank pulley, across the P/s pulley like normal, around the alternator like normal, then run the belt straight across the top of the water pump and that's it. Just use the threaded rod to push the alternator out to tension the belt. You will also need to make a hose coupler to so you can connect a lower rad hose that fits the larger inlet on the water pump to the stock smaller hose that connect to your Rad. deleting your A/C this way is super simple and it works awesome plus looks really clean!
Hey guys in the middle of doing this ac delete and I was going to go with the ac bypass pulley as I can't delete the pump because I live in ca. Anyways I was putting the bypass pulley on when the bracket broke. Literally broke. So I need a shorter belt. I think I figure out how to route it without a pulley being there I just need a shorter belt. How short do you guys think I should get it? Here's a pic on how I think I'm gonna route it. Let me know if this would work. It basically just going up through the tensioner instead of around it.
Ok so I measured out the belt that I would need and it came out to like 74 or 75 inches without the tensioner tensioned. So I am going to go get a 72 inch belt from autozone tomorrow and we'll see how that works. This way the water pump will still run in the reverse rotation it's supposed to. I do really like dmittz's setup because the bracket kind of looks out of place there without a compressor on it. I'm doing this as kind of a bandaid until I can do something like dmittz's because I daily my c4. Maybe same thing but a little bit of a longer belt so I can retain the air pump?
When removing the a/c lines, is it necessary to plug them? Also if also doing a smog pump delete do I need to do the custom stuff or just buy a replacement pulley for both and call it good?
