Hi
My rear Y pipe in my 84 C4 needs replaced,
I'm wondering what the advantage of having a crossover tube??
Thanks in advance

When you post, you need to include the year of the car.
On my 85 I replaced the rear "Y" and mufflers which were in bad shape. I added the cross over myself it helped reduce the drone a little. The 85 front "Y" is an actual "Y" and reduces to a single tube that runs into the cat. The rear "Y" is the same from a single coming from the cat and splits to go to each muffler. If you have a shop do it, they most often will burn a 1" hole in the existing pipe for the cross over and then weld in the cross over pipe. I custom fit my cross over and marked the existing pipe. Then used a plasma torch and cut open the existing pipe to match the inside diameter of the cross over. I believe it was 2-1/2" pipe. So I had a much bigger passage than you would normally get.

IMHO the non crossover Y looks better from the rear
My 1984 got Flowmasters and a new Y with crossover at the same time. I did not have a drone problem and got a nice mellow rumble from the Flowmasters. I did extend the outlets of the mufflers 1 1/2 inches beyond the edge of the rear facia with chromed tips on the pipes. I believe the crossover mellowed the tone. I think the stock exhaust set up with just one cat converter acts as a crossover ahead of the mufflers so the effect of the Y pipe crossover is reduced but, they are not that costly and do, I think, mellow the exhaust tone. If you had a true dual exhaust, without the single cat, they would be more effective.

I still had some drone, even with the crossover pipe. I replaced my mufflers at the same time, so it would be hard to do a legitimate "before and after" test on the crossover pipe. I agree with 1984Z51 about the single cat, and since there's several feet of a single large exhaust pipe between the front "Y" pipe and the rear "Y" pipe, I don't see how there can be any differences in exhaust pulsations between the left outlet pipe and the right outlet pipe in the rear "Y". I think I swallowed some marketing "hype". I painted all of my pipes black to make them less visible.
Think I'll follow you, walker no crossover
I'll check into the quiet flow muffler
Thanks
Monte
FYI - I did some on-line price comparison shopping. turns out summit racing had the best overall pricing. complete system (with band clamps) came in around $550 and free shipping. BTW, I bought an 86-91 system for my 85, mostly because I wanted to utilize the rear y-pipe hanger. no install issues -

Monte, I live in Avon, near the drag strip. If you ever break a hood cable, I have the tool to open the hood. No charge, just vette heads sticking together. AND, you get to learn how to do it, lol. Come on down some wensday evening to the strip for test and tune night. cost you 20 bucks to run, 5 to watch. Usually you get 3 or four runs, depends on how big the crowd is.
