i have a 91 with a 400 small block engine, two times the gear on the dis.stripped everything looks ok and shaft is straight . the gear just wore down until it stopped turning. this a brass gear. i punt on a steel gear, i hope this works, but not sure if this is a fix. any help out there. i have changed cams,so its not the cam, what gives, thanks

The composition of the cam and clearances for sure. Some camshaft manufacturers will actually specify what they'd like to see used on the distributor/oil pump drive. You've maybe clearance shimming issues on the distributor drive OR .......................
You got maybe the "expected life" from the brass gear. I don't know the source of this info (it implies CompCams) but one never knows:
If you have an iron camshaft, use an iron gear. A billet camshaft will either have a billet gear necessitating the use of a brass gear (or composite), or it will have an iron gear pressed on which will allow the use of a iron gear. A .020 slot cut in the distributor ring area above the gear will help with oiling.

Another option if the cam gear is billet is the Everwear gear good stuff
Not a fan of composite gears and high volume pumps in fact as time goes by dislike HV pumps period they dont really do anything unless the build/use really needs one.
Ran a bronze gear a few yrs ago what a mess. Took 5 oil changes to get it all out;when ordering a custom cam make SURE to specify what kind of gear you want.
Make sure you the distributor isnt sitting up too high nor being jammed down too far into the oil pump shaft.
