My '88 is throwing code 36...mass air burn off. My manual says this sensor is below the ecm. I have had my ecm out several times and there is no sensor anywhere near it. Car runs fine and does not throw this code all of the time. Will it cause the car to quit running at some point ? Does anyone know where else this sensor could be. I have replaced almost every sensor I know of ,including the maf in the last few years. I am stumped. Any help would be appreciated.
Here's some info on the infamous Code 36 that can be a problem on early C4's.
First off, locations; The MAF sensor is between the air filter housing and the throttle body. The MAF Burnoff relay and the MAF Power relay are side-by-side on the firewall above the battery. The thread link above has pictures of their locations. Both relays are the same part number.
There have been problems reported with the ECM causing a Code 36, but there can be wiring issues too. The FSM will have wiring schematics and troubleshooting procedures. This code can be caused by a bad wire connection.
It's also possible that the burn off wire in the MAF itself is bad/broken. Again the FSM has test procedures to determine that.
Generally true, but not in 1986, when they used two different relays.

I want to take a MAF apart and trace out the internal connections. I have an extra MAF, but it's the original one that came on my car and I don't want to mess with it.
You can check for burnoff by looking into the MAF after shutting off the ignition. You'll see something like this:
I have an '87. Both relays are the same. Swap them over, disconnect the battery for a few seconds to clear the codes and try again. The relays are cheap, but try and get decent quality ones. I had this problem and bought new ones from Rockauto that are grey in colour. No problems since. Done many miles.
