New to the forum and already asking questions, sorry but figured who better to ask than here. I do have a question about the rack and pinion, I was pricing a new rack and Im finding that they are wanting to know if I have heavy duty suspension or normal, whats the difference ? And how do I tell which one I have
I believe the Z51 option had a quicker turning ratio, can't remember what it was. If the option sticker is still with the car it will show this.
Thank you for the reply, I dont believe that I have the Z51 as there are no marking saying so. This is my first vette so my knowedge for the C4 is none to put it blunt. Im assuming that it is just the base model.
Its a 84. I got it cheap with motor blown. Been working here and there, it has a fresh 350 new fuel tank and lines because it was full of rust, soon new brakes, next steering. Was planning on buying new due to everything else that I have worked on this basket case was totally past repairing or not safe. Power steering lines were disconnected and hanging. So, rather than trying to rebuild the old one and finding out later it is junk, put new in and know for sure.
I have a 96 LT4 with the Z51 package and it did NOT have the quick steering rack in it. My rack had a wear spot or something just off center that caused a momentary bump when turning just a little from straight ahead. VERY irritating! I looked up these guys at Zip and bought their quick steering option and I couldn't be happier with it. The Vette now steers like a real sports car instead of a UPS truck. It goes exactly where I point it, and right now too! I sent back my old rack as a core and got credit for it off the price of the new one. Shipping was quick and delivered in a nice sturdy box, so no damage. I know this is not your year, but I'm pretty sure they offer racks for all C4's.
My 1995 base coupe steering is very tight and not easy to turn when sitting still. I do have the OE sport wheel and don't know if it is smaller in diameter which contributes to the hard turning. Rims and tires are factory OE also. Curious if this is C4 normal????

Not sure what a "sport wheel" is but it is the same steering wheel from 1994-1996. Given you don't have any leaks or air in the system I'd say what you are describing is normal. Mine is pretty stiff to turn while sitting still.

RPO NK4 Sport Leather Steering Wheel. I wasn't sure if the RPO NK4 steering wheel was also smaller in diameter besides being leather wrapped.
I don't know if this will help you, but when I pulled the lower control arms off my 88 for new bushings back in 2003 I found the driver side stamped "Z-52" some where on the arm. What I don't know is the Z-52 the base suspension or were there 3 packages that year.
