Default Winter Storage

Since I live in Canada, I'll be putting the vette away for the winter. I'm going to store it at my parents place as they have plenty of room in their garage. They live in the country though and other years we have found mice in the garage. I'm worried that the little critters will get under the hood and eat wires, insulation etc.

Any suggestions on how to keep them from doing this? Will moth ***** keep them away?

Having said all that, my parents now have 2 cats that tend to sleep in the garage so I don't think the mice will be an issue this year but I don't want to take any chances.

Just another year in the Great White North. And please, don't rub it in (too much!). I too will soon see my car put away in winter slumber, but fortunately, I don't have a mouse problem. However, with my friends vehicles and bikes, mice tend to lean towards taking insulation, paper and seat stuffing. Make sure they can't get into the car itself and also remove the paper air filter. Place some traps around the car if you want to be sure, but I don't know of anything else you can do other than maybe buying one of those plastic "bubbles" to put your car in, to keep everything else out.

Hey Swimmerdude,

Maybe the answer is to just move to California or Florida then we wouldn't have to put our cars away at all.

Believe me the thought has crossed my mind many times.

Yvonne, for the rodents, there is an electronic device available that plugs into any household (garage) outlet. It transmits a high frequency signal that is not audible to humans, but it repels rodents, etc.. You can buy it at most hardware stores for about $5-$10. Also, you should fill the fuel tank completely. This will reduce the percentage of moisture accumulating in your fuel, resulting from condensation. Water and fuel don't mix, so when your vette sits idle during the winter months, moisture from the condensation will "sink" to the bottom of your tank. The vette should be started, and brought up to operating temperature, every 7 to 12 days to circulate the fuel, keep engine parts lubricated, and your battery charged. Make sure there is sufficient ventilation when running your vette in the garage.

I like those bubbles.... :smash How do those things work? I mean how do you get it around the car without tearing it up....It may sound like a stupid question but I have no idea how those things work, also can you use one of those things outside or is the surface that you put on of those bubbles on really critical? The reason I ask is that down here we sometimes get hail storms and it looks like one of those things would make a perfect temporary garage, even at work....

Unfortunately those things don’t work. I read an article on them in Consumer Reports that said they are a total rip off. They had a thing on Dateline NBC on them too. Total scam.

If it weren't for the cats in there I would say put out rat poison in those little pouches but the cats might get into them. :(

Maybe the electronic devices DO repel rodents and such. Since installing them in various locations, both inside and outside the house, and garage, rodents, cats, dogs, even spiders have disappeared. Sometimes experience is a pretty good teacher.

This may sound a little weird. I was told this by several people though. Fabric softener dryer sheets thrown randomly in your engine compartment will keep them out of there. Just remember to fish them out in the spring before you fire it up. I know it sounds off the wall but it does work!

Yep, go with the dryer sheets. They smell much better to us humans, and I use them for the car and boat. I have never had a problem.

Me too! I keep trying but they won't let us in! Maybe if we told them we just want to drive our Corvettes for 12 months of the year they would reconsider.

As far as the bubble is concerned: a friend of mine does use one for his Porsche 944 T (stored in a barn as well) and it is very easy to use. I am not sure where he got it though.

Whoever mentioned to keep the tank full, thanks for reminding me, That one is very important. I also try to store it with fresh gas in that tank too.
