Default Removing M6 shifter wedge

I inadvertently pounded the retaining wedge in too far on my 95 manual shifter. I tried everything I know, including a vice grips and there isn't enough sticking out to grab. Any suggestions other than drilling it out?

Can you drill a little hole in the side then get a pick in it and lever it out?

You can drill a 1/8" or smaller hole and use a dent-puller to easily remove it. You likely don't have a dent-puller so if you know an automotive body man "borrow one". I don't know if the auto parts chains have a loaner tool program for a dent-puller BUT if you asked for a "KNOCKER STYLE" seal remover it would be the same type device.

GOOGLE - dent puller

It's all that I've ever used. Mine is on loan right now.

Those pullers are also called "slide hammers" and are usually available at places like Harbor Freight. Never could grasp why GM went with that goofy wedge design to hold their odd shaped shifter **** on anyway. The 6-speed engraved ball that Hurst sold is so much more comfortable!

I frist drilled and tapped a hole in the wedge. Then ran a nut onto a 2" (#10 as I recall) screw and then passed the screw through a fender washer and then threaded it into the wedge.

Then, after applying some penetrating oil and letting it soak, I screwed the nut down on top of the fender washer (washer covered the top of the shift ****) and continued to turn the nut down on the washer, drawing the wedge out...easy pleasy!

Paul.
