comfort control works when the car is first started. air blows cold and all buttons work. after about 20/25 sec the air is directed to the defrost vent ( still blows cold) and none of the control buttons will work.

The default mode for the HVAC system is heating (with a little defrost). It sounds like you have gone into the default mode. You might be missing vacuum to the HVAC programmer. Check the vacuum check valve under the passenger side fuel rail cover. It is quite common for these to crack from the heat. A visual aid:
