Ok. Stupid question: How do I remove the shift **** on a '96 6 speed? Does not seem to want to screw off and find no hidden screw under the cap on top of the shifter.
There is no screw or bolt, there is a "demon" key.
It is a metal wedge that goes in from the top (under the plastic shift pattern insert) to lock the shifter **** from rotating.
Most people use a vise grip to grab on to it and then pull upward or hit the vise grip with a hammer (upward) to remove the key. They can be pretty well stuck so good luck.
(Note that this is a C5 ****, but exactly the same except for the stitching location on the ****)
Some use a pliers, but I have not been that lucky to get it with one.

Same question. Mine is pounded in pretty good. I tried a vice grips and no matter now tight I get it it snaps off the end. I'm thinking I may have to drill it out. I'd try heat but it will melt the shifter ****. Any better ideas?
Mine seems to come loose every few weeks since I drive it so much. Is there a good way to keep it snug in there other than pounding the crap out of it?
With the needle nose style vise grips as shown wiggle the wedge key backwards and forwards and side to side while also pulling upward. After removal the **** spins off to the left, Its also the only way to do it. A few folks remove the targa so you can get a good grip on it while pulling upwards so as to not bang your elbow during the pull process. GC
