Default Optisparks??

I'm curious as to what to expect to pay a Chevy dealer to replace a optispark on a '95. Also who, where, and what is the best source to purchase one?

I got a Delphi from Summit racing for $360 did the opti and water pump in a day for about $500 wasn't near has hard to do as I thought I am guessing a shop woul d charge $1000 to $1200 parts and labor.

In the first place, a dealer usually will not perform the work with you supplying the parts if they sell them new (as will as most shops). Private shops - $750-$1500 and up...Dealer$1500-$3000 and up.

I have a 95 also and so far no problems. I look forward with some trepidation (fear) to the time I have to replace my opti, but then it looks like its just a matter of systematically removing parts and then reassembling the whole thing. No technological training or special skills, just basic DIY knowledge and patience. Then there is the heater core.

I probably have the knowledge/skills, but I have some physical issues that will prevent me doing this now.

I just did a heater core in a 92. Only thing you don't have to remove is the loose change in the ash tray.

$1.600 for a dealer to replace. $995 for the part. 4 hour book job. Does not include water pump, or antifreeze. That price was a year ago.

as for the OPTI you can buy a $900 dollar one or you can buy a $130 dollar one. I have replaced four of them and as best I can tell and from all the research that I have done and my experience, price of the OPTI is not a deciding factor. one is as good as another, or in other words its a crap shoot as to which one will last and which one will not. I know from personal experience. I purchased a dynaspark that lasted 572mi and replaced it with a new dynaspark that lasted about 11,000mi and replaced that with a Chinese unit from sac city corvettes which lasted 1100mi and replaced that with NOS delco unit still in car. like I said its a crap shoot. there is a very good step by step, which I can post if you like, to do this. but you indicated that you have physical limitations.

don't really agree. My old 92 went through two of the cheap ones in 15k. I went with a petris on my latest and it is just a better unit. Can it fail? you bet but so can any part on a car. To me its a lot of work to replace one and if I was to do it again id buck up for the petris. They at least offer a 3 year warrantee. theres only two optis id even consider. A new delco (not a remanufactured one) or petris and there are no more delcos for sale

Like mentioned above, price doesn't insure quality of these things. I'm on my 4th, although number three was replaced because of a misdiagnosis and was really OK. The bearings, which I suspect are just a bushing, felt a little harsh so I replaced it anyway with another AIP unit (From the famous BAY) that was only a little over $100. (Why waste my money if it's going to be a crap shoot anyway!) The AIP unit claims to have a photo cell equal in quality to the original Dleco and they show pictures of it beside a common Chinese unit and you can clearly see the difference. I've gone over 3 years and a couple of cross country trips in extremely hot weather, so even though it is a cheapo, it seems to be holding up well.
I tried one of the Expensive MSD units that has ball bearings and a case that is built like a high quality military piece. Unfortunately they filled it with junk electronics and it wasn't right from the very start. Haven't heard anything about them making a "New and improved" one, so at $600 bucks, I'm not going there again.
Ask around your local Corvette clubs and you will likely find somebody that knows how to do it for you without tearing your head off.

See if you can find a rebuilt GM unit with Mitsu inards and vent it also. My 3 year old Ecklers catalog shows rebuilt Delco units but not sure anymore.

I'm retired and getting older and rather not mess with the harder stuff anymore and I did it on both of my 92's just as preventive maintenance.
I supplied my shop with the opti, water pump, and serpentine belt and they did it for 250.00. each.
I don't know where you guys are getting some of the instillation prices but that's what I pay the shop that works exclusively on both my 92's. (a Coupe and Droptop)
Bought my opti here http://www.saccitycorvette.com/AIPOptiSpark.html
