Just got it and will post pics tomorrow. Mid 90's - 100+ Heat index today - how hot is too hot for these motors?? Normal operating temp is????
Really love this car.
Push the gauges button to see actual temp. Ignor the analog gauge the fans come on at 228 and 238 or when the ac or defrost is on. My 94 runs just under 200 in Texas and up to 228 when sitting. Best to pull the radiator and clean well. Must pull the knock sensors to get a proper flush. Never get your opti wet you will regret it.
If you hit 250 you have done damage.

I assume the analog gauge reads at the water pump.
You assume wrong. The analog gauge uses the sender in the cylinder head. The digital readout uses the sensor in the water pump. This sensor is what feeds the PCM and the associated programming.
OP....understand you're just getting the car, but this subject has about 10,000 threads and a quick search will yield weeks of reading material. Bottom line is that the LT1/4 are designed to run "hot". With the OEM thermostat, the temp should be mid 190s to low 200s while cruising. During extended stops or stop & go traffic, 210*-220* is not unusual and is considered normal. Once you start driving, the temp will begin to drop. If you see temps above 230*, that becomes a concern.
