Default Repainting a solid top - how much $

OK paint experts, how much should I be looking at to have a solid top painted a different color. It's currently black but I want it painted '90 red (code 81).

When I sold my black '89 the buyer only wanted a clear top. And my new '90 only has a glass top. So it worked out nicely, actually. I just need to change the color.

Edit: also, how advisable would it be for me to try the prep work myself? I have never done anything related to auto prep or paint.

It should run between $300 to $400 depending on how much prep work that you do.

The top is the easiest thing to prep. Take the liner out, wash it a few times with mineral spirits to get the wax off. Put it on a flat surface, wrap some wet/dry 200 grit around a wooden paint stir stick, and have at it. Get yourself a can of high build primer. Tape off the chrome edge, spray it with primer, sand it again with 400 grit, prime it again, and sand it with 650. Buy yourself a quart of paint from a auto paint store. And ask a local body shop to shoot it. The guy shouldn't charge you more then 100-150 to do that. He will have the clear coat he uses on other cars.

If the top is nice and you just want a color change, then get a 3-M scratch pad and scuff the paint with the pad and have it painted.
Red is the most expensive color. Paint, materials, around $100.00.
Labor should be close to that.
So you can probably get it done for $200.00.
HTH.

I bought a painted top a few months ago and had it painted silver to match the CE. The dealership body shop charged me $200 and the job was flawless!! The paint was dead on. Take it to the dealer. :yesnod:

If the existing paint is in good shape there is no need to prime it ,you should be able to sand it with 400 grit or finer .The painter will seal it before applying color to assure no bad reaction.Base/clear or single stage is a personal preference ,I personally prefer single stage on solid colors and base/clear on metallic.Single stage provides equall gloss for less paint and less labor. :yesnod: :yesnod:

Is the black paint in good shape? Why not just leave it black, the glass top looks black from the outside anyway. :D
