Did GM make any C4 ZR1's with automatic transmissions?
NOPE ! ZR1 was all about the macho. If you wanted an automatic you got an LT1, which could be had either way. If somebody tells you they have an automatic ZR1 they are either BSing you or they don't know what a ZR1 is. I seriously doubt that anybody would devalue a real ZR1 by putting an automatic in it. Also ALL LT4's were 6 speed manual. And if anybody says they have an automatic LT4, they either changed it or it's really not an LT4.

There's many LT5 - A4's out there. All are quite fast, some of course faster than others. Done by the General? NO!
It AIN'T ZR1 - it's ZR-1 There's much misinformation in your comments BUT .............
This is my ZR-1 automatic - lol. PO put the emblems on - I've not removed them yet because of fear of damaging the paint (looks like weatherstrip adhesive under neath). I'm surprise of how many Vette owners looks and stare at it trying to figure if it's real - last nite a ZR-1 owner must have spent 20 minutes looking at it AND went back a second time lol!
AND
I would think ZR-1 owners would know right off because the emblems are the wrong color for a white car - lol!

I never say ZR Dash One when I'm talking, so I took in the lazy habit of not typing it either. As far as putting an automatic behind an LT5, it kind of seems like putting shower clogs on an Olympic marathon runner. Everybody to their own taste though or we'd all be driving Prius.

Lots of "posers" out there, for sure. But, you're right: any ZR-1 owner can pick out the visual clues, w/ or w/o badges.
Short list:
Of course if the hood is up, the LT5 is unmistakable.
All ZR-1s had the convex rear bumper/rectangular tail lights, PLUS the third brake light mounted above the hatch (on the roof).
The rear bumper is ≈ 3" wider than the base C4, and there is a black spacer on either side adjacent of the license plate, between the backup lights and the license plate.
The body begins its transition to the wider tail, beginning at the front edge of the door panels, resulting in a bit of a shelf that is really visible when looking at the side-view mirrors (from the driver's seat).
The rear wheel nuts are set quite deep compared to the base C4s.
All ZR-1s were built with the ZF M6 speed trans.
All ZR-1s have a manual secondary port throttle control switch on the dash marked "NORMAL - FULL POWER".
All ZR-1s came with XF3 suspension and associated 3-position ride selector switch on the center console
All ZR-1s came with an 8000 rpm tach (as does the LT4 cars)
All ZR-1s had rockers that roll to face down, whereas the standard rockers roll and tuck under the car.
So, yeah, you're right: any ZR-1 owner can usually pick 'em out in a heartbeat.

My clutch leg is "shot" so AT is my way in life now - don't mean I have to give up speed and power though.

So driving wise how's the LT4 compare to a LT5 - I've heard that the sound of the LT5 is really something.

Tho I prefer the M6 trans myself, those that have installed auto transmissions might argue w/ you - far as drag racing goes! For example, Kevin Costello, a local guy, has a customized DD he drove to work in downtown Chicago, sporting an 4L60E with a lockable converter that runs in the low 10s. I wouldn't call that like putting shower clogs on an Olympic runner!

I'd love to see that car! Thanks for the ZR-1 trivia...After all these years, I NEVER noticed the black filler plates on each side of the license plate.

I know of about 10 auto conversions in the ZR-1 community, a few are twin turbo Callaway or Lingenfelter setups. The rest were converted due the various disabilities and the inability to use the left foot. If anything it affords the driver to make the most of a TT setup or allows a fan of the LT5 to not be deterred by the physical inability to shift. I bought one for the barn as it makes one of my ZR-1s even more unique. Your Macho mileage may vary. GC

Old thread I know but funny I remember having this conversation with a girl who lived in my dorm back in college (would've been around '94-'95). I grew up with Corvettes and also drove one at the time (still own it) so know a fair amount about them and we got to talking when she mentioned her dad had a ZR-1. When she mentioned it was an automatic I told her she was full of **** and I'll be damned if she didn't come back at me a week or two later with a bunch of pics of the car. It was a white ZR-1 (yes I know the difference) and it sure did have an automatic transmission in it. Always wondered what the story of that car was.
