Broken rocker arm there for sure. You can see the big crack in it and that piece laying there probably came out of it. Old age fatigue. Looks like rebuild time. If you just do the heads, then the rings will probably start leaking next.
Yeah for sure...I'm so relieved. It's times like now that I wish I had a set of 1.6 roller rockers to install while I have the valve covers off. I'm always looking out for a good deal on a set but they are pricey and I can't justify spending the money on them when it runs great with what it's got.
(A), there is no oil pooled in that rocker valley. (B) did I see a cracked rocker?(C) Might be a broken pushrod. (D), Its rare but have seen rocker stud pulled out of the head enough to effect rocker action and make a huge noise. The lack of oil interest me. DAMN, didn't see page two when I typed this. New set of scorpion roller rockers are around 300 bucks at summit. Kinda feel like an idiot now,lol

It's all cool man...I'm just glad we all have this forum to go to for advice and help. It's great! An yeah I wish I had an extra $300 laying around for something like that. Maybe someday lol. I'll post my results tomorrow once I put the new rocker on. I think I can get one tomorrow

junk yard is not a bad place to shop for certain things on/for a SBC. If getting a used part, make sure you get the rtight one. Yours doesnt look like the guided rockers found on mostly vortec heads. Were you located? I have a couple of rockers laying around

If you do eventually go with roller rockers make sure you get the correct length pushrods to go with them. The tip of the roller should seat just a little to the outside of the valve stem and wipe to the inside, with it being centered at mid lift. You can check that by bringing it up to TDC on that cylinder and pull the spring off the valve. (the valve won't fall down to the bottom of the cylinder if the piston is right under it.)Install a real weak test spring, just strong enough to pull the valve closed and then install your new rocker. You can then turn it through a full cycle and see where the roller tip rides before you install the rest of them.
Thanks for all the info. I'm sticking with the stock rockers for now. I put the new one on and the noise is gone and it's running fantastic again. I'm back on the road and didn't have to tear the engine apart. I'm so relieved. Thanks everyone for your responses
