Even a "judged" car show has its flaws - score cards and all - who's ever gone to a judging school - lol? I've judged plenty of cars and consider myself pretty knowledgeable- but unless you're "in" the business as a full time participant envolve in classic/custom/muscle/street rods cars you just can't be qualified to judge a car show. So they select guys that usually are "willing" or get drafted to do the best they can. NSRA, NCCA, GoodGuys, CCCA, all try very hard at judging our cars, but they make mistakes too because there's always "that" car that is special, unusual, or so very very rare that makes it difficult to judge. Again I said go to shows to talk cars and enjoy the people attending.
Guess it depends on who is judging. I just did a charity show yesterday where our club took a raffle car to raise money for St. Judes Ranch for Children. I took my C4 and entered just to show our club's support for their charity show, and thanks for inviting us to bring our raffle car to their event. My car was the only C4 there and in a class with cars from 84 to present with a bunch of C6 & C7's. Well, much to my surprise I got a trophy! You just never know.
My point is that I'm surprised to see a plain Jane automatic run of the mill corvette beat a rare clean zr1...that's my point..I didn't think it was confusing to figure out my point
i cant count how many car shows i seen come down to politics or whos hosting it.... if the white one was a senior club member and the zr1 wasnt a member of the club.. that right there will do it.
last year my ls1 conversion chevelle took second in a custom class to a lemans with an old paint job a 350 and a highrise with 2 650 cmf carbs (way too much for a 350), and a huge hole sawsalled in the hood.. and then i had to tell him his carb was leaking gas all over his intake. little did i know he was friends with the sponsor of the show.... it happens.. unless its a concourse or nationally judged show.. just gotta rolll with it.
Those trophy's are worth about $10.00 max. I would never sit all day waiting for a $10.00 trophy only to be beat out by a club members Chevy Vega.
I quit entering or staying all day if I do enter years ago - I just see old friends and hang out or check out something I've never seen before which doesn't occur much anymore- lol. I don't need trophies to make me feel satisfied or good about my car anymore. I'm past all that.

It shouldn't be assumed that if you have a rare or low production car you win. Car shows are about detail and detailing. Judges have their agenda and sometimes focus on stuff the average person overlooks. There is always a chance of politics in smaller shows. A friend won a National Camaro event with a stock 96 V6 Camaro in 98. Blew my mind, I did even understand why he showed it. It was a well detailed super clean all OEM part "Plain Jane" and evidently one of the best in the country. I have never been much of a car show participant.
Show was judged by corvette club..two judges with score cards checked each car..open hood...the cars were both nice..just surprised at results not a big deal.
Many shows are about the relentless search for dirt. The ZR-1 might have been just a little more dirty that the convertible.
