Default Wiring

I own a 1989 6 spd. bone stock.
The car has wires that are cut, added, etc. I was thinking of replacing the wiring harnesses. Has anyone done this? Did it pay off for them in that they had less shorts etc. I found the engine harness online. Is there another one for the engine comparment?

Thank you

There are two harnesses under the hood on an '89. There are 2 from the C100 on the left side, the engine and forward lamp harness. The "pass-through" to the ECM behind the distributor/right cylinder head is part of the engine harness it appears.

The engine harness on the C100 is dependent upon options. Does your car have C60 or C68 AC? I have both harnesses for the C100 removed from an '89 M6 that are uncut. These harnesses are from a C68 car I'm quite sure but the tag is still on it so I can confirm. These don't seem to suffer from insulation shrinkage either.

If your car has C60 AC a correct harness becomes a real chore. There seems to be maybe a couple potential possibilities.

Drop me an email and we can discuss these.

The problem I am having is periodic shorts. Just recently this week my ECM went bad. I realize it is old and would eventually go bad. But I cannot help but think that it could have been because the previous owner added, subtracted etc wires. Under the dash drivers side is a rats nest of wires. I can tell that some of them are not factory. But I am SOOOoo poor at tracing wires and continuity I wold rather have a complete harness that I can plug in. At least then if someone had to trace the wires they could use the factory decision tree without deciphering the changes. And in my engine compartment I have three wires that come off the factory harness and run to the front of the car. I have no clue what they went to. But, they are clearly factory.
I guess my real need is the harness under the dash. Drivers side.
Thank you

I see as many as 8 choices for an "in car under-dash" harness. That get's very complicated - very. You didn't mention if C60 or C68. Which?

The three wires you mention I'd think could easily be identified.

The car is not here. Presently it is getting the ECM replaced. But, the AC is automatic not manual, if that helps. And as far as it being complicated. Somehow I just knew you or somebody else would be saying that. It's just when I look under there and see wires that look like they were thrown in there, cut wires etc. You know what I mean.
Here is a picture of the wires. The harness is just under the brake reservoir, Over the fan relays over the drivers side fender to the very front of the car, I think?

Thank you for the help.

When you say "under dash" do you mean inside car or you're referring to "under-hood" but at the dash/firewall? Your snapshot is under-hood but your post #3 hints "inside car".

Do you have the FSM?
