Tonight when I went to turn my headlights off, the rt. one made several LOUD bangs before the motor finally shut off. Same when I turned it back on. I opened the hood when I got back home in the garage so I could watch when I turned it off again. It isn't loose and floppy like they usually are when those plastic pucks go bad. It hits the stops really solid on both ends. The motor just doesn't shut off when it hits the stops and you can see it torquing back and forth as the thing strains against them. I'm afraid to do this too many times as it will either strip the gears, if they aren't already stripped, or bend the linkage.
Does that sound like the gear is worn out and letting the gears jump before the motor reaches it's torque shutoff current, or do those current limiters ever go bad and just let the motor keep grunting till it times out?
I've changed pucks in a friend's headlights before but hers didn't pop loud like this. Hers was just weak and kind of floppy. OPINIONS:
I would suspect the control module is compromised. It is mounted to the front of the left wheel housing. That's what "senses" the stop to halt and reverse the motor.

Good luck.
Yeah, I think that's what it is. I unplugged that unit and when I plugged it back in, the rt motor started up banging again and had to pull the plug on it quick. Always the most expensive part in the chain of operation on this car.

Oh no effin shizz! Both back up lamp sockets failed on my '96. A $14 ACDelco socket can't outlast a .73 cent bulb.

'96 here also, sorry I forgot to mention that before. I've seen and changed a couple of assy's with worn out pellets and they all seemed to be loose and floppy feeling. Mine is real tight and hits the stops HARD. It just doesn't turn the motor off when it does hit the stops. The left one flips up or down and as soon as it feels any resistance to moving, it shuts the motor off quick. The Rt. one keeps pulling hard enough to bend the bracket. Can't keep that up or it'll break something expensive, so I pulled the plug on that side till I can try another module.
