Default Horn problems

Hi
I was working on replacing steering wheel. All went okay but the horn will not shut off. There are a few contact spots where I think the spring sits on. There was a plastic component but the bottom of spring. Mine is completely broken. I think this is part of the horn but I can't find the part number. Or is it something else going on. Any suggestion
any help will help me out. its a 1984 corvette.
thanks

OP - or anyone else that is anticipating going into a tilt/travel column I would order a minimum of 3 plastic pieces, maybe 4. The retainer that the OP and nearly everyone breaks, the cancelling cam and the tower for the horn contact (used selectively).

You could use these GM#'s as references when shopping I'd think:

7808385 retainer, 7849228 cancelling cam(carrier), 9768768 tower (selective) and the 9769448 horn wire. There are different horn contact strategies depending on the steering wheel used and horn cap used. Many have been changed through the years so they may not match the years that are cataloged.

A 5/16-18 set screw would be a wise buy also as it allows you to lock the "travel" feature. The wedge needs installed correctly and there are two lengths but I believe I've only ever seen one part #'d for the C4. If you need to buy one you'll need the correct reference #. GM# 7809977 I'm quite sure is correct.

GOOGLE will give you images or Corvette Central when searching the GM#. I borrowed the snapshot from an earlier thread where I posted the information.

This fellow has had a very recent "early column" experience. Reach out to him. I haven't done an "early" for many years and it was a couple of Cadillac columns. These images are from an '84 FSM. Do you have one?

Use the link in post #2 and search the GM#s I mentioned.

The nut was a 21mm and thanks so much for the info and I order 3 of those black plastic pieces. I'm just changing my steering wheel and all was going okay and I found out that plastic piece did something. My horn would shut off. lol

Did you buy another '84 steering wheel, have yours recovered or maybe an after-market offering? The horn operation is very different I believe for the '84 and '85 vs the '86 and later. You might experience issues if using the incorrect or different year steering wheel. knowing what you bought might save you some aggravation.

If a replacement is there a link to the steering wheel you can post?

Hi
I bought a new steering wheel when i went to carlisle last year. It was for a 1984. Everthing is the same as old steering wheel and i do have a new center piece but the old one is going back in it still like new and it worked before. I just need that black plastic piece that does not allow spring to sit on horn connect all the time. This was causing horn to make noise all the time. I did have new steering wheel on and all was working fine but until i get that plastic piece i can't check horn out. I hope all works okay
Thanks
this is the steering wheel I got and it came with center piece with horn attachment but I bought it in Carlisle
for a lot less

I put an '86 wheel (genuine) on my '84 many years ago, and found that the '84 horn button fit the '86 wheel just fine. I tried the '86 horn button, but decided that I preferred the way the '84 button worked. The whole button moves on the '84 to blow the horn, but you must press the center of the button on the '86!
