I have been wanting to do engine work very soon but I am not sure if I want to go with a supercharger kit or stay all motor. I was thinking of getting a Carroll supercharger. Does any one have any opinions on what I shoud do since I am willing to spend the money? Any opinions would help
Re: Serious modification question? (Double Black Vette)
I'll bite. I have a stoker now and really love it. I have had superchargers before as well as turbo cars....each has their good points....but I really love a stroker motor. They sound very stout and have the power to back it up. I guess it depends on your application and also the condition of your engine now. Whatever you do....you will enjoy the power. I would just research each option and talk to people that have the different setups to get the pros and cons on each. :)
And I'll back up Bill (IMXCITD). His 383 just sounds killer. Although I have never really seen the car fly (No where safe in the area to do it) I know the car will from the history.
If I find another C4 and want power, I am going with a 383! Man I love the sound of that car!
Re: Serious modification question? (Double Black Vette)
What kind of power are you looking for? Superchargers tend to limit your top-end power, but are great for low end. Turbos are good for both, but have turbo lag. Either way, both require lots of money to do.
EDIT: All engine is all-around good stuff. Should increase all-around power band. I'd first go with a stroke to 383, get better cams and heads, and a torque converter myself
I'm QUITE sure I didn't see it from you. I got it from a crotch-rocket movie (don't remember the name of it) and the author wasn't listed. So thus, the author is unknown. :boxing

Geez, it's just a quote in a sig. I did see it on a t-shirt once and think it's a cool saying, but can't we just leave it at that...? :)
Back to the thread - I have a preference for strokers because (among other reasons) they can't be seen, and are easier to get past insurance companies and motor registry authorities... I haven't done either yet so thats about all the input I can provide. :)
There are a few guys here who have gone via the supercharged route, hopefully they will chime in.
How much would a supercharger setup cost in comparison to a stroker setup? I've seen prices for the SC alone running close to $5000 (not sure if that includes installation or not).
Re: Serious modification question? (Double Black Vette)
What you should do all depends upon the end result you're looking for. From my limited knowledge with engine building and engines, I can only give you recommendations based on opinions I have heard in the past. It seems obvious that if you stay with an "all-motor" setup, it will endure the least stress on the engine and its internals as compared to forced induction options (e.g. turbo, supercharger).
I went with the 383 stroker motor and am completely satisfied with it. If I only had an extra 10 grand at the time that I had the motor built, I would have gone with a 420 cid engine. Sad part is that I ended up spending close to $26,000 on the whole package at that time (engine, exhaust, brake upgrades, transmission upgrades,etc.). I only walked in there planning to spend about $3500 on swapping out the upper end of the motor (intake, etc.).
I suggest that you do a lot of research before you decide so that in the long run you are happy and satisfied with what you end up with.

A local guy is selling his procharger for 1500 out of his 92 vette. They can be had for less than 5k
Do a stroker at 9.5:1 compression. If that does not have enough power for you, throw on a blower kit. At 9.5:1 compression you will be fine just bolting it on, updating the programming, and going.
Ok, lets say I wanted to go 12 sec with my car from 14 sec right now. Would a stroker or blower do the job? BTW, a modded hood is out of the question if it pertains to any of these mods; they're butt-ugly in my mind.
Mackey is doing the 12 sec thing right now without touching the motor. Get the gears (4.10 6m or 3.73 A4), Converter to match if A4, cat back exhaust, Drag Radials, and lots of practice.

He used to. He has gone into the engine now and is in mid 11s.

With an LT1, you would benefit greatly from some 3.54/3.73 gears and a 2600-2800 stall TC (to start), which would get you in the lower 13s at least, which you could prolly get now with sufficient practice. Hotcam, ported heads, and you should be in the 12s. Without having to spend all the money for the SC.
