Default Appraiser Needed

I am in the Chicago area. I had a 1984 corvette coupe. I am in need of an appraiser in this area that will place value ranges on the 1984 Corvette. I will need deposition and possible court appearance. I know that this would not be done for free. Please get back to me with any leads. Thx.

I'm not an authority but I think you'll find unless you have something that is truly unique, like an authenticated race history or some such, you will be at the mercy of "comparables", which you can find on any number of web sites. With a car as common as a C4 and one that old the value comes down to what someone will pay. You can shop Craigslist and local ads and all you will find is what people want to get, not a true value. As I said. its going to come down to comparables.

My problem is what you have said is hear say. I have numbers from the black book which is hear say. To get judgement in this case, where my car was taken and sold for scrape, I need an appraiser to set possible values.

I understand your problem. You may find that hearsay is the best you can come up with as there are no hard fast values. If you watch "Antiques Roadshow" you can see what the so called experts value things on, or you can go to collectors books but they are all based on what you refer to as hearsay. As a 33 year old car depreciation is not an factor. Value is based on demand and that is relative to many things. If I were going in front of a judge I'd have as much documentation as you can find from reputable sources (not Craigslist) like the Blackbook, KBB and perhaps some published auction results. I wish you the best of luck. How did you lose your Vette?

What you need is an expert witness (your lawyer can help with validation of same)

Good source for actual sale prices, as opposed to "hearsay:" COMPLETED eBay listings.

OP - If you don't have a vehicle to offer up for an appraisal it's very, very, very difficult effort. A very specific photo documentation and receipts for maintenance go very far to establishing potential value. If you've none or very little - good luck.

I was told once that the best protection for establishing value was to pay the appropriate "personal property evaluation" for WHAT YOU BELIEVE IT'S WORTH and NOT what the TAX MAN asks for. Declared value insurance can even be disputed and often the policy holder is the loser.

Do you have any history of having a "declared value" policy ever on the car? Maintenance history and snapshot portfolio? If your state/county or municipality has personal property levies, did you pay? What was the last evaluation you paid taxes on?
