My Driver's Info Center (DIC) loses its memory every time the car is shut off. So, things like my fuel range and average economy are always only based off the time the car is running.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching and didn't find anything on here that looked right. Maybe the part isn't called a DIC? Any help would be much appreciated.
You're talking about the instrument cluster. The DIC is in the center cluster and looks like this:
There is a microprocessor inside the dash that controls all the displays. It has RAM (Random Access Memory) on board. The problem with RAM is that all the data disappears when power is removed. That means that power must be applied at all times to maintain the RAM memory. The LCD fuse (on my car) applies power to the dashboard at all times to keep the RAM alive.
You need to find out how the constant power is applied on your car. It appears that it is not there on your car. It is possible that there is a bad connection in one of the connectors that are connected to the dashboard.
Yes, the piece I'm talking about is what's pictured below. The one with the switches that changes info on the main cluster (where the tach and speedometer are). Any thoughts as to which wire might be constant power? I'll look around and see if anything looks out of place but some previous owner hacked stuff up for the radio so who knows. Any fuses I should check? Thanks for the reply.
I've got a FSM, which has been helpful for other stuff. I'll take a look. Was hoping this would be a known issue / easy fix. I'm in the middle of an interior swap and trying to take care of other little things that don't work while I go. That stupid list just keeps getting longer!
As to what the DIC is your both right. The first pic is the DIC the second is the DIC switch assy.
However the more likely cause of the problem is missing constant 12v to the CCM.
On my 92 a fuse labled LCD supplies constant 12v (Hot at all times) to two different pins on the CCM on orange wires. I don't have wiring schematics for a 1985.

This is where a FSM comes in really handy.
The OP doesn't have a CCM - his car is an '85 and very different from '90+ cars. His is actually a "Cluster Function Select" & he has an "Information Display Area" which is what he has only "key-on" function control.
OP - '85 FSM is a little different than the later for diagnostic cells and I believe in the wiring your '85 should appear at about 142 in the electrical diagnostics section. INDEX is maybe 101.
Right where WV said it would be. Not sure how to decipher it though. I'll have to sit and think about it some when the kids go to bed tonight. Too crazy to think otherwise. Here are the pages.
Does the Courtesy Light Timer module have anything to do with this area? I know what is burnt out and need to replace it. Here's the current state of the car by the way.
