What do they look like? If they are Multecs, clean them by tossing it in the trash and getting a set of reman ones that are clean. If they are not Multecs, cleaning can be economically done but not by you. You'd need a flow bench to see what it is doing, change the basket filter and run it through the ultrasonic bath and retest.
Cleaning the outside doesn't mean squat. Kinda like dressing a hobo up in a Tuxedo. I do mine every 3 years and the before and after tests show that it does pick up some flow. I have a friend who lets me use the flow bench but he can't clean it so he is used to verify that FIC has done the job they said. The few times I checked, he has. I send him my MBs (Bosch) injectors, Jetskis, ATVs, etc. If it isn't diesel, I send it to him every so often.
IF it is just the outside you are trying to make look pretty, brake cleaner or even gas can work. It won't remove the varnish build up or clean the basket filter but it does make it look clean on the outside. I'm more interested on what's inside myself.
Replacement isn't the issue. Getting the dirt off the body without ruining the injector is.
Guess I'll go with carb cleaner while covering the tip.
The only thing that can be ruined is the paint. If you have Multecs, the thing that ruins them is going to be the ethanol in the fuel since the coils are fuel cooled and most gas stations have ethanol. Kinda why I said you should just trash them if they are Multecs. If they are not, you can spray whatever you want to clean it and nothing will happen. The injectors are sealed and shouldn't have any issue.
