I went to drive the car to work this morning and it did not want to shift out of first
it was doing 30mph at around 3000 rpm.
turned around and went back to the house and it seemed to start shifting
i put it in park then back in gear and the engagement seemed way harsher than it has been in the month or so since I bought it
i Checked the fluid and with engine running it was between a quarter to half inch ABOVE the high end of the hot range
i was planning on a fluid and filter change tomorrow morning
any ideas on why it didn't want to shift? Could the high fluid have anything to do with it?
High fluid can foam, causing lack of pressure (automatics work off of pressure). Fluid and filter and possibly additive might take care of your problem( filters plug, and fluid gets dirty or burnt), but its likely a rebuild is in your future. Parts wear, increasing clearances, and seals dry up causing loss of line pressure.
I would not mess with governor unless it happens again. Getting cover off isn't to bad putting on can be a PITA. There maybe a seal; it was discontinued and GM used sealer. There is an aftermarket seal available you would want to get one before attempting to remove cover. If the cable was way out of adjustment or disconnected shifts would be delayed and harsh. Maybe it was the cable.
Get a Trans-Go "Boot Strap" TV valve kit. About $6, and an afternoon's work to install. It'll cure it. Set the TV cable while the pan is still off. Usually the plunger has 3-1/2 "notches" showing when properly adjusted (the TV valve centered on the TV passage).
Does this go by another name? Couldn't find it on there site
