Tiltl says it. I do mostly short trips and have a hard time waiting to let the motor warm all the way up before wanting to get on the gas. Usually wait until coolant temp is at least 160 though. What do you think is a safe temp before doing so? I'm not talking about winding it out to redline, just to ~4-5k rpm. Would it be better to use the oil temp as a better indicator of "actual" engine temp?
I usually try for about 160, but my work exit is directly across from the on ramp to the freeway. Sometimes I have to jump on it a little to get into traffic, but I don't wind it past 4K until it's at full operating temp.

Re: Engine temp before getting on the gas (C4DC)
140 - 150 degree Oil Temp. Why ask for trouble???
Even that might be a little cool, but I know its circulating well and is protecting the go fast parts.
Go with the Oil Temp. Oil is what lubricates the rotating parts, not coolant. You want the oil to be warm and well circulated before stressing the engine. Also, oil temp takes much longer to rise than water temp, so if you go by the oil temp you won't have to worry. It's not uncommon for the coolant to be at full operating temp before the oil temp even registers. :yesnod:
