I tried to search in the audio section, but not much on the C4s.
Here is the problem...I noticed a buzzing, blown speaker sound out of the rear. Is that typically the amp on the speaker or the head unit?
The cd/cassette on my head unit doesn't work so it looks like I have to gut the system (head unit, wiring and 4 speakers).
I don't want to spend too much money and would like a retro unit(modern tech, but stock look). The reason is I love that I leave the top off all summer and the doors unlocked and if I have a modern head unit there's a chance it will get stolen.
Thoughts on my problem and opinions on those retro head units
The buzzing is most likely the amp (located on speaker mounting bracket). That can be rebuilt for like $80.00 plus shipping from the guy at www.carstereohelp.com. I'm sending my amp out this weekend to him. If you call him he might be able to price the other repairs over the phone.
I'm looking at ditching the entire system, 3 of 4 speakers work, and they are old technology, they were good in 1989.
I want Bluetooth, Android control, and decent speakers.
I've done alot of research already, was leaning toward Kenwood, but they have BT linking problems.
Alpine, has a small amp that is compatible with their units, and simply is one plug operation.
I'm leaning toward Kicker 6x9 3 way for the rear, and 6 1/2 round 2 way for the fronts.
Use the factory speaker covers, and I'm all good Thoughts anyone?
D.
If you're looking to replace the entire system try looking at Double D Mods give Dennis a call I'm sure he can give some great advice on what works well.
Yeah on their website, it shows only C5 & C6, and I've neither one of those, yet. Maybe in the future, but wont apply to my C4.
I did see on their website they make extensive use of crimp connectors. Not gonna do it! I guess I'm still too old school, as I strip the wire, slide the heatshrink on, and solder all of my connections, then heat the heatshrink to seal it.
Ok - I have a small - but BIG update! So - as you know - I stated I have the Bose system in my 1994, but did not have the original head unit as a previous owner tried to replace it with a cheapy single din unit (poorly). But the covers to the rear speakers said "Delco Bose Gold Series" on them - so I've always assumed it was the Bose system. So - today I decided to finally start looking under the covers. I started on the rear passenger side speaker. Pulled the cover off and found a kinda cheap looking 6x9 rather than the circular speaker I was expecting. I unbolted the speaker mount from the cover and flipped it open and my assumption was confirmed - no Bose amplifier unit. Just a standard speaker wire running to the 6x9 speaker.
So did someone replace the original speaker covers with Bose ones? I now need to read up on the wiring for the non-Bose units and adjust my plan wiring plan as necessary. Here are some pics of what I found:
Bose Speaker Cover Bose Speaker Cover What I found when I pulled the speaker Unit pulled View of speaker underneath the speaker cloth. Rear of speaker showing no amplifier and that it's a standard Delco unit.
