Default Help! 1990 model tachometer is going nuts!

Just purchased a 1990 Coupe and the tach reads beyond 6 grand cruising down the highway. Seems to be close to accurate idling but you can rev it slightly and the tach will peg out beyond 6 grand. Travelling down the highway with the tach pegged out I've put the car in nuetral and the tach will come down so I don't think it's interferance with the speedo. Help is appreciated before I just start buying parts. Thanks alot.

Mine was erratic in my 90 also. My wire to the tach filter was intermittently being grounded because it was touching the head and the insulation melted off of the wire. When I pulled the cluster and took it to the repair shop, the technician checked it by touching the needle so it would "bounce" up toward the 6000RPM end. He said if it just floats it needs rebuilt/replaced. If it is good after the bounce, it would return to the zero position. There are several old posts on this which list repair facilities you can mail your unit to for repair. Check the archives or email me for the name of my guy. Authorized repair shop, do all the dealer work here and reasonable. Mine cost me $130 for the complete cluster exchange. Of course, my digital readouts were shot too.
