That's why I don't bother with craigslist. Sell it on the forum, drop a for sale sign in it somewhere, put it on cars.com or Autotrader or ebay. The people buying and selling on craigslist are the dumbest people out there.
That said my buddy is buying a c6z for like 6k less than he should be paying because the seller was too dumb to list it anywhere else.
I agree there are a lot of dumb people buying and selling on Craigslist.
However, it is just one form of advertising that is easy, quick, and cheap. So it works well for a lot of situations.
If you are buying or selling something nice, it is all about finding the right people so it is good to try a variety or several sources of advertising.
I have used several sources for buying and for selling. I don't mind using Craigslist but I expect to see some scams, lowball offers, misrepresented items, etc. Although maybe not as often with other sources, it still happens with them too.
I've been at both ends of a low offer too. Best practice for both buyers and sellers - Don't make offers over the phone/text! Be the first to show up with your cash offer. Just leave your card and politely say the offer stands and stop taking up the seller's time. If you are both travelling to meet for the sale, and you plan to low-ball, you'd better be able to substantiate your lower offer! (because you found something serious that wasn't disclosed in the ad) .
I've got a 92 coupe up for sale... Mechanically is near perfect.. the interior has 150,000 miles on it. I've got a small crack on the passengers rear quarter...
it's a craiglist ad so I am asking $5,000
SO I get a call from a guy... "The Authority" on corvettes I guess.
Says that a corvette needs the trans fluid flushed and replaced every 15,000 miles????!!!?!?! This is news to me....
Also says the Optispark and water pump must be changed every 50,000 miles.... Am I learning something or what? so I have 18 pictures posted... showing every bad part... and every angle of the car...
Sure, it is irritating when it is done to you but to be honest, don't we all try that to some extent? I paid 1700 to tile both my bathrooms. I knocked off 700 from his initial "best deal" price. I pushed it past the new year and he wanted me to sign up there and then hence the $2400 price. I wanted to think about it and check other options (which I have already done). Sure, it affects his commissions and I suspect he'd rather I just pay up the $2400 but I didn't want to. So what complain can I have when it is done to me when it is time to sell?
They just assumed you don't know much about your car and tried to feed you some BS to justify their ridiculous lowball offer.
"About that house you're selling... did you know the roof must be replaced every 8 years or the plumbing will go bad? And did you know any gaps or leaks in the weather stripping may cause damage to the hardwood floors? Those are risks, but I like the house so I guess I'll offer you $25k for it."

It is a great assumption seeing that most people don't. Would I do it if I think I can get away with it? Absolutely. It's been done by others to me and I do it in return. Cycle of life.
Tried to sell my 84' one summer and had a guy stop by to look at it. Told me he has been buying and selling C4's for 10 years and knew what exactly what the cars go for and knew basically everything there was about them.
He claimed my car had been jumped based on the 2 folded down sections of frame under each upper control arm... I'm not even kidding about that... (not sure what they are but they look like the factory did that to add clearance for the arm when it's fully extended) After he left I looked up pictures and they all seem to have those folded down spots, or at least the early ones do. (Some expert) Offered me $2k, a day later he called me and offered $2,500, I never called him back, he was clearly just a low-balling dumbass.

Do you always deliberately return that which was done to you?
We are all part of the "cycle of life" and we all have a choice about the way we live our lives. Believe it or not, we can choose to *not* screw our fellows, regardless of what was done to us. Yes it's a choice -- it is not necessary to pay back the negative. Let it go. The phrase "break the cycle" exists for a reason.
The real problem here is, some people simply do not care if they are making this world a s#itty place, as long as they get theirs. Sound familiar? This is a downward spiral and it affects everyone. We are all brothers and sisters.
I offer a contrary attitude: be part of the solution and treat others fairly, it is better than being part of the problem.

While I realize Gandhi said "We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change." I really lost that idealism when I was much younger. I kinda gave up on making the world a better place so I just play by the rules the world shows me it plays by. On a couple boards I am on, people give stuff they don't want (within certain amounts) freely. I have taken and I give. On a couple others, everything is sold so I sell.
Sure, you hope for the best but expecting the worst and getting it is less disappointing than expecting the best. And if you exceed that expectation, I will single you out for the next time and it is much less disappointing.
