Default This is ridiculous (Another "C4 values" thread)

I am the LAST person to GAF about C4 values; I have mine b/c I love driving it; it's a driver.

Still, this messed with my head a little bit...

I recently got a hair up my azz idea to buy an early '70's Triumph TR6, and slap in a sbc engine and a T5 trans. I was thinking it would be a thrill ride. It WOULD be a thrill ride. So, I started looking at TR6's for sale. W....T.....F!

Look at this rot box (check out the pic of the door sill....There is no rocker left!) for $3500??
ROT BOX

And this wretched pile...for $5k!?
Wretched pile

Have a look at this, incomplete, partial resto, bondo box;
$5000 FOR THIS??

I'm sorry, but I'm seeing $1000 cars in those listings. For the money that they're asking, you could have a driver, to pretty nice driver, C4. And with the C4, you're getting WAY more car for your money. WAY more. Those Triumphs, cute as they are, are barely anymore than "kit car" build quality/content.

There is no point to this thread...just wanted to vent about how those **** boxes could command those values for so little, when a C4 which is 10x more car struggles to command about the same.

.

Werid huh
Love those old Triumphs. Buddy as a Tr3 (could be a 4)hes had since high school just sits. Dark green slot mags rode around in it as a kid hes "saving" all 50+ of his cars. Wife and kids cant wait for him to kick off so they can fire sale em lol
I can ask if he wants to sel it complete should be decent. if I ask his wife its yours haha

Do it that would be one hell of a rollerskate

There's a glut of C4s still out there, is why. Also is the simple fact that each new generation post C3, devalues the previous gen further due to the performance gains. The C5s are starting to drop routinely into C4 prices already, since the C7 was released. I know a guy that got a C5 that was in better shape than my C4, for less than 6k.
The old triumphs are a sought after car, due to the era they lived in, the general attractiveness of the car, and the sheer rarity of seeing one.

You see the same thing with Trans Ams particularly third gens, commanding much higher prices than a similar shape C4. More TAs got wrecked than C4s. Corvettes, for better or worse are generally bought by old people. They tend to be better preserved because they aren't driven as often and live in a garage.

Truth.

The bargain pricing of the c4 will end in the next few years. Most of the really cheap and terrible ones are fading away. Prices will climb here soon.

could be
member here in the C4 section has a decent 04 black Z06....110k miles for 10k that will present an issue for C4 sellers hard to say no to that unless someone has to have a c4 or isnt keeping up on pricing.
There are still some that will pay for a priime example

Have you seen what Gas Monkey and the other "reality" shows are supposedly paying for their project starting points? It seems like the VIN and title are worth a grand on their own - rusty sheet metal costs extra.

Not to hijack your thread, but I have a 1978 MGB with a 3.5L Rover aluminum V8 w/ Rover 5 Speed. The car is a hoot to drive, but in a different way from my C4. The great thing about the Rover conversion is it's 50 lbs lighter then the MG 4 cly cast iron block.....

Have to agree. I enjoy the shows, but damn...the money they throw out sometimes calls for a big Whisky-Tango-Foxtrot!

At least as far as my wallet is concerned!

TR6, reminds me of the gutless 1973 MG I had, nice little two seater, but what a dog.

Value is what someone will pay, not what its really worth. I have a barn full of Brit cars (belong to a friend), TR3, TR4, TR4A, MGB, MGC, Spitfire, Spitfire Mk 2, TR6, Healey Sprite, Sunbeam Alpine and a Healey 3000. I've driven most of them. Talk about rolling junk! But then to each his or her own. These cars are rare because they turned to rust quickly and not many survived. They just weren't worth the money to restore. Mechanically they did not last long either, but they are easy to rebuild. I don't know what the real values are but there was an MGB-GT, completely restored for sale locally for $3500. That seems to be about what they are worth. I'll stick to my Corvettes, thank you.

Bigger questions are why would you want one and 2 why would you get your pantys in a bunch over those crates?
You come across like 'that old guy' who doesn't get his way and throws a hissy fit- we know the type.
I mean your not living in the 70s anymore if you want a POS project get 4-5k and got buy one. Its not hard.

Yikes. I'm "that old guy", huh? You must be "that helpful guy"...right? We know the type.

To answer your questions;
1. why would I want one? Stated...right in the first post of this thread.

2. "Pantys in a bunch"? I don't wear panties, and if I did, they wouldn't be "bunched" b/c of Triumph prices. What is mind boggling to me is that C4 prices are so LOW...when compared to these cars, which are way less car. Also stated, right in the first post.

If you think my post was a "hissy fit", IDK what to tell you; it wasn't. It was an expression of amazement over the difference in value of the two cars, for the content and technology of what you're getting.

I'm pretty keen on the idea. If I can find a decent bodied "driver" (obviously I don't care about the drive train) for ~5-7k, I'll probably go for it. Every stop light would be an adventure.

DUDE!! I was looking at Triumphs over the weekend! How funny. I love driving small fun cars that no one else has (rarely see C4s around here) and thought maybe maybe. Its slow but could be a cruiser I think

But yeah they are pricey. They look good though. I've always like that classic Euro convertible look. I dont even know if they are European

I think you can haggle some sellers down a lot. No one wants those cars. They are just pricing them high bc of the look but they are what, like 65hp stock? You should definitely try it, just tell them your friends are persuading you not to buy one lol

I'd love a tr6 so would a lot of other old guys. 6 cyl, three carbs..good looking car. That said there's a mob rotting away in my driveway that wouldn't be worth the price of a paint job...
