I believe that most use a 19mm/3/4" adapter type spacer that is hub-centric to the hub and provides a correct diameter to be hub-centric to the newer wheel. Generally speaking there are "dimples/divots" between wheel stud bores so that the length of the OE studs require no trimming. If studs have been changed through the years to longer or maybe those with a "dog point" then maybe a trim is required. Generally the adapter is sold with low height wheel nuts for the spacer/adapter to the car.

I believe your 84 is the same as my 86 AFAIK. If you have 8.5" wide rims, the backspace is +32mm. If they're 9.5" then they're +38mm.
The newer ones are all +56mm so they are not a direct install without using some form of spacer.
If you're open to reproduction rims, there are some that are available that will bolt on without spacers. Just did have with mine, got some 18x9.5" with a +40mm backspacing and they fit just fine without and spacers having 255x40zr18 tires.

Here is a compatibility chart one of the other users here was niceenough to share with me that might help.

The link for the rims and tires takes you here:

So you would be going from a 32 or 38mm back spacing to a 56mm back spacing.

I had the 1 inch adapters to suit the 56mm offset 88-96 rims for around 10 years, when I had the chrome come of a rim I got some direct fit 38mm offset rims.
In Australia adapters are frowned upon by police.... hence I changed the wheels first chance I got after risking it for 10 or more years.
corvette central has direct fit wheels or look on ebay .
