The plastic body pieces on these cars is far from precision. The recommended measurement method for ride height is the jacking tab under the sill behind the front wheel and in front of the rear. Using the wheel arches, the distance from the tire to the wheel arch or the fenders can lead to misinformation and frustration. At one point I read that part of the final assembly tool package was a large mallet. While this probably apples to C2or even C3 cars there is a lot of variations in the body panel gaps on our cars that were addressed on the C5.

I went on the NCM tour of the plant just last month. I can tell you no mallet was used for final fitment. But they did slide a plastic guide in gaps, and adjustments were made with hands, arms, and full hip thrusts into a panel.

This explanation about the plastic body pieces also is the reason why so many people ask about the difference in rear wheel spacing, such as the left rear is tucked in more than the right rear, or vice-versa. Sure there may be worn bushings or other suspension parts, but if an inspection has been done and everything still works well and no weird sounds are present, the more likely explanation is that the body panels are not installed with perfect symmetry.
