Need help getting my 91 Corvette started. I bought it at an auction. Theft recovery. Someone broke out ignition switch with screw driver and hammer. I have the key to the car but will not work because ignition cylinder is broke. Any suggestions?? Thanks GaryInArizona
Be sure to pull the fuse for the airbag first. Then unscrew the 2 torx screws from the back of the steering wheel. Disconnect and removethe airbag and set it aside far away from you. Rent a steering wheel puller (makes it easier to get to the steering column). Rent a lock release tool and purchase a plastic "turtle" as you will tear the old one up when you remove it. The turtle is a plastic cover that insulates the column from any electrical components. Autozone will be glad to rent you the tools and tell you how to use them.
Look over some youtube videos for more help or use the search feature here.
This is a job you can do with simple hand tools. Be sure to replace the airbag fuse when done. It will not start without it (ask how I know)

Here us a nice video. The 91 may not have the plastic turtle thing but my 87 did. I never got that deep into my 91's steering column to know.
By the way - Redline goods makes a great steering wheel cover. Their company actually used my 91's wheel to make their pattern from. It stitches on and you can get it in many colors and thread patterns. Makes a nice upgrade to your driving experience.
Just a fyi based on what I read. The computer records the value of the resistor on the key the first use then never again. Unless you either use a resistor dongle to supply the resistor value or replace the computer with a new one, you have to use the same resistor value on any and all replacement keys else it will trigger the vats that it's not right and won't start. That includes if you replace the cylinder with a new one with a different key tooth pattern, it needs to have the same resistor value on the key.
