I am trying to determine if my hood support is factory or if it is an after market piece. I own a 1989 convertible. Below is a picture of my support and a picture of an OEM support sold by Ecklers. I need help finding which one come from the factory. Thanks.
Only a guess, but I've never seen the upper support that was chrome, if that's what I see in your picture. Should be entirely black. Maybe it's just a reflection of light on the upper pole.
The whole support is black, it was just the way the light shown on it.
I was more concerned about the top of the lower half being completely round where as the support in the lower picture has a piece cut out of it. In addition, there is a arrow painted on the lower piece whereas mine does not have that arrow.
Did they change the hood supports for 1989? It was around then that they went to the single hood shock. My car was made very early in the model year, Aug 8, 1988 and was # 1804, and was wondering if the hood supports were different earlier compared to the later cars produced that model year. Sometimes they do change pieces during a model year.
Thanks.

I have an 89 vert (Red as well) and the first pic does not look right. The factory one should not be round on both ends, but have the cutout like you said. I will try to post a pic tomorrow of mine.
My 89 has a orange (push?) button/lever where the pieces seperate (where the top pole sits on top of the bottom) I believe mine is original, can go take a pic if you'd like.
Here is the one on my 89. Looking closer you might just be missing the orange piece, the rest looks just like yours (but dirtier).
Not sure why the first pic is sideways, but you get the idea.

When I first got the car I thought my support rod was broken because it kept pushing out to the side of the orange guide, then I realized it was supposed to do that...I just ordered new struts as one was missing and did not one to replace just one. I bought the Monroe ones and will let you know how they work when I get them installed.

Yours sounds like the one shown by Patsgarage below. He may be correct in saying that the orange piece on my car may have broken off by a previous owner. There is orange inside the medal tube but not sticking out above it.
