I was afraid of this. For whatever reason, it would appear that piece is just TOTALLY MISSING from the back of my car! (Grrrrrr.. Why? Why would you take that off and throw it away?)
On the rear of the car, down low, between the flat metal plate and the bumper cover.. There is nothing?
1) Should there be an egg crate there or some kind of support?
2) If so, will one off an 86 work?
3) If not, what goes there? Nothing?
Not the first time I've seen that and at some point the rear "absorber" for the early through '86 cars was made obsolete and to use the later offering there were modifications required to be able to use it in a repair. The other option was to "toss it". Was this why yours ain't there? Who knows.
I believe the difference was the "window size" left/right of center that you can see through the absorber of Dt86's car and more. If your rear impact bar were original you need an original from an '84 - '86 OR one from a '87 to '90 and modify your bar however needed.
I believe one other car I had seen was for sure repaired with used parts and the "toss it" was the choice!! Wasn't me.
Maybe a previous owner was involved in a rear-end collision and whoever did the repairs just decided to replace it. That egg-crate is part of the collision absorption system for the rear of the car.
I would think that piece would be available from wrecking yards that have Corvettes.
