Default How lucky was I?

Imported my 88 Corvette in January and it looks like I dodged a bullet.
Funny thing though, I thought Corvettes were made of fibreglass, not asbestos.

seems you lucked out. Also seems like the government went a bit overboard. There should be a year when all cars are grandfathered in.

Classic car imports to Australia are slowing to a trickle due to confusion over new regulations introduced in March this year, with fines of up to $180k for individuals and $900k for companies importing goods containing asbestos.
Wow, that's a little extreme ...

I didn't think brake friction parts have used asbestos for a decades. Even those old cars would have had new brakes put on by now anyway. Brakes don't last forever! Inspectors wearing hazmat suits! Using that logic, maybe they should check tanks in old cars for gas that has lead in it. If brake asbestos was THAT toxic, all of us that were kids in the 50's and 60's would be dead by now from all those big trucks that our Dads followed on the highway!

A complete over-reaction in my opinion. Hopefully the government comes to it's senses and sorts out the mess it's created.
It reminds me of a similar situation of a few years ago when a couple of TV reporters posing as tourists were shown through a couple of abattoirs in Indonesia and filmed some instances of extreme animal cruelty. When they aired the footage many people were rightly outraged, and as a result our government who only held onto power with the alliance of the Green Party, stopped all live beef exports to that country.
This sent a number of beef producers broke and nearly destroyed the live beef export industry.

Reminds me of the lead paint causing learning problems with school children. Got rid of the paint and the scores went down (Yeah, I know)

So some loser imports building materials with asbestos and they extend the laws to cars?!?!?

This is what happens when we allow idiots to vote because the idiots then vote in the idiots who come up with these idiotic bills!

In the article it says some of the inspections cost like $15k...its a scam...as usual some scumbag is handed a contract to do the testing/inspections and is making a sh** ton of money. When something doesn't make sense remember "follow the money".
