Default Road Force Balance

Since I have new tires on my 96 base I had just a small amount of vibration in my steering wheel. A local shop has a road force balance machine. They quoted $25.00/wheel. I did it. I was able to watch the whole operation. It is quite time consuming and exact. Each tire has to be rotated on the rim to where the machine says. Sometimes twice. All I can say is I really notice the difference and the $107.00 with tax was worth it to me. Perfectly smooth at 80 (and slower). Since my 96 has different size tires front and back and the sawblades are directional the tech says he could not match the wheels to the best location. He did match the two front tires so there was no pull each way. I do think the quality of the Road Force Balance is dependent on the experience of the tech. I had it done at LeClaire Auto Service LeClaire,Iowa. Dan

I haven't found anybody in my area yet that knows how to run the machine correctly. Went to one place and the guy didn't have an "adapter to fit Corvette wheels" Needless to say, we left that place quickly! These places advertise their fancy new technology and then hire some mouth-breathing Neanderthal to try to operate it!

I agree!! I can't tell the different between road force and someone who knows how to do it good the old school way. Mostly because people don't know how to use the hunter machine properly.

I found an old school German guy near my work who does a lot of work on old Porsche/Ferrari's and I just bring him my wheels when I get new tires and let him mount/balance. He does it old school and he gets it nearly perfect everytime.

What I learned yesterday from the tech doing mine is that there is a big difference between "perfect" balance and what a road force balance is. All my tire/wheel balances were within 1 oz, but he still had to move each tire on the wheel to minimize the Road Force imbalance. After this is done they then do a regular spin balance. As you know a regular spin balance takes maybe 4 minutes. This takes 15-20 minutes a wheel. I was there for 1 1/2 hours.

My tech punched in the car (stock wheels) and it told him the adapter to use. My 96 took the "Yellow" adapter.
