OD clutches are the weak link, and the smallest, so they go first. Most guys who tow with a 4L60 in OD have experienced this. You may try flushing the trans fluid (its most likely burnt) and replacing the filter. this may buy you some time.
have you heard the hard parts line? it's what a transnission shop uses to bone a newb up the wazoo foward and backwards
you have the most common auto trans on the planet, yet to estimate the rebuild $$ the trans con has to disaasemble and inpect the hard parts because he's not sure of the cost of a sun shell, planetaries, or a clutch drum
even though you're at his little shop of horrors, with the most common transmission ever made he has to tear it down to estimate
GM srta is a good value, as they come with "HARD PARTS"
I agree 100% with what you said-
I should have given some details on the car:
The car is a '94 - 94,000 when bought it from a Chevy dealership last Aug and the trany was "resealed" 2 weeks after I bought it - the Chevy dealership did the work, because it started leaking all over the place - I wished I had my "smart" hat on when I agreed to having it done - should had just gone with a "factory rebuilt" unit - but they probably thought I was concern about keeping it "numbers matching". Probably would have a warranty of some sort at least.
I've had another car do this many years ago ('73 GTO) - just once and the car was nearly new!!
