Default 87 bushing replacement.

Hello guys,

Has anyone had the bushing replace in there early C4? id like to redo "all" of mine, as they're or at least I think they're original. I'd like to have this set installed, anyone know what to expect in labor? or if its possible to do myself? I don't know if I want to mess with the shocks. Thanks!

Here is a link to the kit I am considering, any suggestion?
Thanks!

Hi

If you have access to a hydraulic press its easy, otherwise you need a sharp knife and big vice and sockets.
I replaced all my bushes recently and am regretting it, the new bushes have made the suspension harsher and more bouncy....
(the bush grips really tight, like having very stiff springs)
Most noticeable at the rear...

Cutting the outer rubber edge of the old bushes will allow you to use a drill, drill several holes in the rubber for easy removal.
Is quite a time consuming tough job, you need a brace to prevent the front upper control arms from bending.

MAKE SURE you use the special lube provided for each bush, liberally coat them in and out or they will squeak.

the worst bushing on my 86 are the rear spring bushing . They are almost gone. I notice in the more expensive kits, these bushing are not included.. Is that a ploy to get more cash out of us? I went to Harbor F. tools and bought one of their bigger vices.. don't get anything under 6 inch if you go that route. Takes at least 6 to do u joints.

I had planned to do mine when Banski had their sale last fall. I used the Banski parts for the trailing arms, camber rods and toe rods and any other remaining parts used the poly bushings. It definitely firmed up the suspension and tracks much better now. In my case the upper ends of the camber rods were the worst pieces for being worn. Those were severely worn and wallowed out. I did not attempt to do the batwing bushings as they seemed solid and didn't want to risk getting it out and not getting it back in.

There is no good solution here.
There is no such thing as a universal bushing. Every bushing is different. The problem is no one will tell you what he rating is.I discovered a variety of hardness ratings when I checked a variety of bushings.

Hey Richard what bushings would you recommend for a car that's only street driven and not track driven? I read your entire article and it was very useful. I see many options for poly bushings from different brands. Mine's an 89 with 92k miles.

id also like to know the answer to this, I drive mine on only the street, so I was thinking the softer one might be better? But my lack of suspension knowledge... I want a ride that doesn't beat the hell out of the car, I live in Michigan, I still want stiff suspensions, but I want my components protected. Thank you!

Default Bushings

I suppose im just confused what bushings I need,

This is a set of 50 for the tie rods, seems like way more than I need?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Energy-Suspens...3113G/10002/-1

This is a set that is for the rear struts?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Prothane/311/7-1204/10002/-1

And this here is for the front,
http://www.jegs.com/i/Energy-Suspens...7107R/10002/-1

is this all I would need? hmm..
I do have a press, so it is possible for me to do it I believe.

Thanks for the replies!

I changed my front arm bushing recently, recommend going with a press. Vises need a method to really put pressure in place, not really what they are meant for. I tried, finally got a 12 ton press from HF and bing bada boom, done. Took a little press learning, but all good.

For the upper front control arms, as mentioned, need to be super careful changing those, GM didn't design for maintenance, they intended selling a new arm. Doable, just be careful.

Oh, and when taking the big nuts off the control arm end, do NOT use the arm as leverage. I did until I noticed the arm was bent.

This is NEWS!
When I was rebushing the suspension, the only information difference I found was that the black material had a graphite content. I chose that for the sway bars, red for everything else.

I would use a press for installation. You want to slide it in smoothly and evenly.

Make sure you clean the barrel/opening carefully. You don't want the bushing hanging up on a burr.

Lube carefully.

The Yellow Energy Suspension bushing has held up really well.
