I have a 1995 and need to remove the hardtop. I have the tool to remove the front 2 bolts, but do not have the ratchet to remove the back 2 nuts. What size ratchet do I need to purchase? It appears to be a 7/8, but I cannot tell exactly.
If no one has swapped the bolts, they will be a "torx" head. I'm not sure of the exact size but if memory serves it is a 10. Any ratchet will work on front and rear with the correct torx head.
Your car should have the tool in the center console to remove the bolts. Its a ratchet with a built in torx bit. Can you post a pic of the bolts in question?
As stated above, I also think the original poster is referring to the hardtop for a convertible. I've never seen a C4 having two different tools to remove the lift out roof panel. Every C4 that I've owned has had four torx bolts, not two torx and two standard bolts. My 86 has two strange security bolts in the rear but I have the security lock to remove them...which has a torx head as well.
If the car is a coupe (targa top) there should be a small ratchet with a Torx T40 tip. That tool will loosen the front two bolts in the top corners of the windshield frame and the two rear bolts that hold the Targa top to the halo bar.
If the car is in fact a convertible with the removal hardtop, the same T40 bolts are in the front of the hardtop. At the rear of the hartop there will be two bolts that attach the rear of the top to the convertible hatch lids IIRC, the bolts are 8mm or possible 10mm.
The convertible hardtop will have a pair of steel brackets that are bolted to the B-pillars and the box frame at the base of the top. These should be 15mm bolts (maybe 14mm?) and there are a total of 10 bolts.
