Default inconsistent smoking

88 l98. Not sure what's up but I just replaced the FPR after recent discussion. I was smelling gas in the vacuum line and in the oil, but also smoking white a lot.

But it's not always like that. Went to check the heads/gasket with a coolant system pressure tester yesterday, and the smoking stopped completely. Had a VERY carsmart uncle come over earlier today to take a quick look, although unfamiliar with vettes. retested the coolant system and a light smoke started and puffed when revved. it was the first time i smelled coolant in the smoke, but my uncle thought it could've been coolant forced in by pressurizing the radiator. Anybody got ideas on what could be wrong? He guessed it could be intake/heads/gaskets with a tiny leak that's causing random smoking.

Easy to test for combustion gas in the coolant. Ask for kit at any auto
parts store.

If exhaust gas is entering the coolant system, even from a small rupture, you should see an
increase in op temp, and coolant forced into the overflow bottle, and there would not be a
siphon back to the radiator during cool-down.

If the smoke is being caused by coolant, this link amy help identify the problem:
