Have an opportunity to purchase an 88 vert. Yellow, full power, new black top and black leather interior. Borla exhaust.
Has a rebuilt title so I'm a bit concerned. Have done a bit of investigation and have all the information necessary to locate the previous owner. May be able to get a history there. Found a reciept (5-02) from a local rebuilder here in the area. Sells pretty much nothing but rebuilts. Has a good rep. but a rebuilt still concerns me.
I'm still fairly new to this Vette thing so I am depending on your suggestions and responses. I do not have a dig camera so no pics are currently available.
Just wondered what you folks thought?
The body is pretty good, some faded paint and a couple of nicks/bumps but other than that...generally ok. Interior is in pretty nice condition and the car runs strong and sounds good :D .
I'm not a Vette owner yet, still looking and learning, so I can't offer much advice on what to look for other than to do a search of this forum. What I can tell you is based on owning a lot of cars and a bunch of years experience. Be real carefull with any car that has been rebuilt. Usually these cars have been totaled by the insurance company and bought by rebuilders who then repair them for resale. In most cases the cars have been involved in an accident, flood damage, theft recovery or some other like incident. This has been my experience but may not be the story for this particular car. After you find out what the previous owner has to say and you are still interested, take it to a reputable mechanic for a check out and I would even take it to a body shop to check the frame. Bent frames can be straightened but how well depends on the quality/intgegrity of the rebuilder. Even if it checks out OK, I personally wouldn't give the same money for it as one that was not rebuilt.
Thanks guys. This is exactly what I was looking for. I value and respect the opions of those of you that posted here. I know a couple of you personally and have been watching and reading post from the others...all straight up folks! - Thanks again.
I wasn't thinking about resale, just buying it, modding it up and driving the daylights out of it.
He wants to trade my 87 coupe and $8K? Not a chance in heck!
I took it for a drive today. Runs strong, tracks straight. The body shop that did the work is a Corvette only shop that does quality work. They are the "go to" people if you need a Vette rebuilt or frame straightened.
Based on your responses, if the frame, etc checks out, I'm gonna probably offer him $7000.00. If he takes it, then I'll do what I said. If not, I'll walk away :D
Again, thank you for your responses. :yesnod:

Hey Oldman...thanks for the link  Forgot all about them and they're only about an hour-hour and a half away.
In Florida, a car gets a rebuilt title after it has been purchased by an insurer or the insured after and "event." As previously stated, it could be a total, a dunking (water damage), theft recovery or???
If you're careful, you can pick up some sweet deals. you can also get burned BIG TIME :mad .
Like it was mentioned before, it generally kills the resale, but I just want to mod the crap outta it, drive it like I stole it and enjoy the Florida sun
Don't want to part with my coupe for this one though...I know the background on it...I watched it grow up :D
Didn't get a chance to talk to the orig owner today. Too bust working cases
I'll wait until I talk to the seller first. Pays to be in my profession  ...found all kinds of stuff...insurance info, sales slips...blah, blah, blah
No sweat on the carfax man. I appreciate it anyway. I really ought to check into it myself. Until then, maybe someone else can run one for me...we'll see.

A good rule of thumb I learned while working a few car dealers is the value of a salvage/rebuilt car is up to half of what a clean car would be in the same year, mileage, etc.
Ex: Hypatheticaly speaking, using easy round figures, let's say this 88 vert NADA books for $10,000. Therefore fair price of the rebuilder you are looking at is $5000. Even without looking at that 88, the highest I would offer $4000 and that is generous......$7000 way high. And you have to think about how safe the car really is. Would you feel secure getting into a wreck with this Vette? Will the already weakened structure be strong enough to handle another full blast hit? The car must have been wacked pretty good to total it out in the first acciedent. Even if you get a good deal, you are almost certain of losing money on resale, plus only a handful of people will be interested in buying a rebuilder.
I have seen several people come into the dealership with rebuilders that get next to nothing on trade. I bought this guy's 67,000 mile 89 Mustang 5.0 Vert for $1900 because my dealership was offering $1100 for trade. This was a $6000 car in clean condition. But it was a rebuilder, not a good one either. I could only get $1500 out of it 9 months later.
