Default Water Pump

Hi,

I've been chasing a high temperature problem with my LT1, 93, C4. I have replaced the radiator because it blew out. I have done multiple flushes, replaced all the hoses and pressure tested.

Lately, the dashboard temp gauge stays around half, most of the time. If it sits idling for more than a few minutes when it's hot, it will creep up almost all the way to the top of the gauge. It comes back down when I run the heater or begin driving.

I used to see a stream of water coming out of the side of the top tank when I had the cap off. Now I don't. In fact, when it's running I don't see any movement in the tank at all, which leads me to believe the water pump may not be circulating coolant.

I replaced the pump a few years ago but it has probably been more years than I remember. Should I see coolant moving when I take the cap off the tank? I really don't want to tear down the pump just to find out it's working fine.

Thanks in advance

Are your fans turning on? What does the digital temp say?
If your water pump wasn't working, your car would over heat vary fast.

Have you checked the coolant tank and checked the lines in and out are clear? When you did the coolant flush did you pull the knock sensors on the block and poke around the openings to clean out the scale so all the coolant came out?

Possibly air bubbles stuck in the high point restricting flow? Did you bleed from the thermostat cover bleeder screw?

If the temp stays in the mid range when driving and warmed up you should be ok. When standing still the temp should rise to about 235-240 when the fans should turn on and bring the temp back down to mid range. It sounds like your fans aren't working if the heater brings it down.

thermostats can stick or not open at all; I'd replace the Tstat...and no I don't want to start another thermostat / thermodynamics debate, but I'd put in a 160 or 180 degree Tstat.
