Default Poor 92 Corvette Driveability

Well I think I may be experiencing my fourth opti failure. (2nd one in 2017) I data logged a run and was wondering if someone would be willing to take a look at the file. While i was logging the data i had my dad kick it hard in 2nd on the interstate from about 1.5K RPM to about 5.5K and the car bucked the entire way through the RPM span. Tuner Pro RT is showing a code 16 (Low Res Crank Signal Loss) but the car hasn't set a code for that. It does feel just like the other optis that I have had when they were about to fail, but I wanted to post a log file and collect some opinions from others.

Thanks guys,

Connor Coughlin

i'm not a mechanic but i will just ask anyways...do you wash your engine with a garden hose or drive in heavy rains?

sorry, not trying to be a smarty pants, its just something that comes to mind when i see multiple opti failures. i tend to think operator error

I do not wash the engine bay at all since that can lead to early death. I have driven in rain before since I daily this car, but not since this unit has been installed. It’s also a vented unit.

Thanks,

Connor

I know you have the LTCC kit installed. Are all your grounds good? Spark plug wires good? Have you taken the black cover off the LTCC to see if it is getting signal from the Opti?

I’ve taken the cover off of the ltcc cover. No red diagnostic light. While the car is running or off. The plug wires or on good, that’s the first thing I checked because I forgot to put one back on. I haven’t checked the grounds for the coils. I installed a Petris optic and noticed it worked great for 2 weeks and the the performance started to deteriorate.

I would reach out to Chris Petris or his daughter and explain to them what is going on with your car. Strange things can cause a code 16. There is a brief diagnostic sheet that he provides with his opti's that will show you what tests to run with a code 16. Could very well be the opti. I asked him what brand sensor he uses since the website calls it, "Mitsubishi grade," and all he said is that their sensors are, "proprietary."

I just might, let me look through my book when I get home. It follows the same principal as the FSM for the most part, a little different. He is a smart dude.

Well now you've gotten my wheels turning lol. Haven't had an opti failure (knock on wood) but I DD my car so it's just a matter of time lol. I'm definitely intrigued by this system. Plus it would give the engine bay a unique look lol

I wouldn't worry about the Opti. It's a pretty reliable unit. But, once they start failing one after another and you can't find a suitable replacement, time to start looking elsewhere.

I think eventually someone (maybe Chris Petris has already done it), start offering an opti that is BETTER than the original Mitsubishi unit.

LOL Petris and his code 16 optis.....

Has he admitted that the car can run on a code 16 yet?

The fix is to throw it in the trash and get an OEM opti.

Any idea where to get a genuine OEM opti?

Thanks,

I got one for free on CL. Had 40k miles on it and worked great.

The 2 I received from Petris had chunks of plastic and grinder residue on the inside. I have plenty of pics but photobucket is holding them for ransom.

Maybe you can see the pics here.

You'll notice that Petris vanished from the thread after I posted internal pics of his product. This was 5 years ago so maybe they have gotten better. I'll never know as I'll never do business with them again.
