Is 140k miles TOO much for 35th Edition?

The suspension has been rebuilt. shocks, all bushings, ball joints, Steering rack, transmission, headlight motors, power window motors,
gas window struts, and hood struts, Bose speakers, hub bearings, cooling system. axle joints just to mention a few things. Unless these items have been addressed , this car will soon cost you a fortune.

If you do your own work, most of that stuff can be relatively inexpensive, and all of it may not need to be done at one time.
For example, I looked up part prices at a major online parts company. The total for what was mentioned was only $230.26. There could be many others that weren't listed, like headlight gears or bushings, antenna motor or ribbon, misc. switches, sensors, shocks, tie rods, etc, but these can be done relatively inexpensively too if they are even needed. The biggest costs are
things like engine, transmission, paint and body, interior, but these seem to be in good shape from your description.
$27.23 ($6.89 and $17.34) window struts
$13.04 ($6.52 ea) Hood struts
$44.68 ($22.34 ea) Hub bearings
$117.65 Cooling system
..... $9.40 lower hose
..... $7.67 upper hose
..... $23.79 water pump
..... $76.79 radiator
$27.66 Axle joints
..... $14.84 ($3.71 ea) half shaft joints
..... $12.82 ($6.41 ea) half shaft joints
$230.26 total
? Bose speakers (too many options on stereo replacement or upgrades)
Good luck with your decision.

UPDATE:
Seller has no past records...none. Told me to look at CarFax to see what has been done to it...(umm...no)
Says "it drives good and runs good - there should be no problems"...
This is where I say... "Ill Pass"

Write the check for 4500 bucks and call it a day! I'm a bit biased towards 35ths. Buy it for the fun factor and that it's a different looking C4. Car looks together and clean. It's a steal for a C4. If the engine goes drop in a 383 or any crate motor. Drive the hell out of it and enjoy!

is he flipping it or had it awhile?
Carfax I dont believe goes back that far
Not eveyone saves records, I dont.
dont discount it just yet unless the seller is being evasive and your gut says no. had a big stack of records when I bought an 89...found out later the hard way the repairs were hack jobs and had to be done all over.

Mayor...I paid $5,500 for my '88 35th 2.5 years ago and have since replaced the seat covers and headlight bushings and rebuilt 1 headlight motor. Flushed/filled all fluids, new brake pads all around. Just normal maintenance items on a 29 year old vehicle. It has been kept in a garage and under a cover most of it's life so weatherstripping and interior pieces look very good. At $4,500 you won't get hurt. I have the DN 4+3, I see yours is an auto, drive it, if you like it, go for it, there's enough guys on here who sound like they would be happy to take it off your hands. If you keep it you won't be sorry. But, I'm like you, if my gut says something's jinky then I'd walk away. My money has been too hard earned too get mad about losing that much.

If you're passing on a very clean and cheap car because it has no records, at least post the ad so someone else on the for can get a good deal...

I'm in Jersey and would look at this car and would probably be interested in buying it as a gift for a cousin of mine...so OP if you're not interested please pass this good deal on to a fellow member like myself. My cousin can't afford one but loves C4's and likes to wrench himself...i think this is a great car for someone to "get into the vette world"

I'll say it again....it looks to be a pretty all together C4 for 4500 bucks. Basket cases are 2500-3500 bucks. Buy it and if you need money, sell the wheels, emblems and moldings. Wheels @1500 bucks...center caps are @300 and emblems are pricey or non-existent as well as moldings. Can't get these parts so if you sell them you own the car for free. I'm not telling you t dismantle the car...just tryouts no to tell you these parts are worth some $$$. If I I had room I would pick it up myself since I'm in NJ. Someone will buy this car at 4500 bucks if it checks out mechanically.

It looks to have pretty well cared for. The seller probably doesn't want to maintain the car and is selling it. I'd go and drive the car and look it over for yourself. Who cares about maintenance records when you can look the car over yourself and see what's been done and what the car needs. I would offer the $3500 and see if you can get it closer to $4000 or less. Its a bargain at that price point because all of the expensive items are done. The seats and steering wheel alone being in that shape show someone cared enough about the car to put money into it. If they put that kind of money into the cosmetics then the rest of the car should be well maintained. The seller simply just does not know what he has and I would not hesitate to give that car a chance!

it has 140k on it cant expect the engine compartment to look real fresh. Paint upholstery even weatherstrips dont look bad those are big $ suckers
You can tell if the engine and trans are sound, try the ac basic electronics get a feel for how it rides. a 150k mi camry costs that much.
At the end of the day its a high mile car, will it $oak you over time? Yes theres just no way around it;even a low mile car will have problems, age takes its toll on everything
so what if you put a few k in it still got a nice 35th. If you plan on keeping it not a big deal
If youre worried about having more in it than its worth you will..these are money pits just like any used car

Jump on it.

id buy it for that price.
they are at least unique among the early c4's and as cuisinart said, the interior, which are the big ticket items, look good. i wouldn't hesitate at all.
take those valve covers off and refurb them with paint stripper and a pressure washer booyah done. clean the rest up . fix the leaky seals which im sure there will be a lot of. great car!

pics are so small hard to tell
perhaps its a metal replacement and getting some rust?
being in NJ imagine a lot of the hardware would be corroded not that big a deal though. If op is stuck on a 35th doesnt look bad if he doesnt mind a lot of miles.

That is a nice car. The fact that the interior is in good shape in a big plus. That is a good indicator that the owner cared for the car. I also learned the hard way that mileage alone is the be all end all when judging a car.
