1986 Service Engine light is on. I am trying to determine the best way to read the codes. I have no device at this time for reading OBD I codes. What is a good economical way to retrieve the codes. I see that Advanced Auto has a OBD I reader very reasonable. I do have an ACTON 9570 OBD II reader and have seen on Amazon where they make an adaptor cable to go from OBDI plug to OBD II reader but am skeptical about this option. When you have an OBD I reader where do you actually see the codes listed? On the device or the dash? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Looking at Actron's website your scanner does not support OBD I, even with the cable. You can use the paperclip method and count the flashes of the CEL to get the code, or buy a cheap OBD I scanner that will display the codes and some live data, but to erase them you still have to disconnect the battery.
Here's the video I did but you can make a paper clip into a U shape and ground the pins on the OBD I port. Then you count the SES flashes on the dash. If you can't find the codes let me know i have the book in the video and can tell you what the code is.
