Hi fellow vette owners ! been reading up on the optispark distributer particularly on the 93s I understand if moisture happens to get in there's chance for ignition failure and a ride in a tow truck. my car hasn't seen rain in years and just wondered if that's the key to keeping the moisture in check. I get it if the water pump leaks your probably dead in the water. it's also an issue with keeping your engine clean my guess is gunking and washing it might risk the chance of water getting in. I've had 10 vettes one being a 92 and two 93's I've never experienced any ignition issues with them but the more I have read the luckier I feel since some owners claim to have had problems. am I on the right track? keep it dry - keep it running?
Rain will likely not make a difference. It'd be tough for water to get to the opti eother from above or below.
The rotor/cap portion of the opti will eventually fail due to general wear inherent with rotors and caps. A water pump failure will certainly help speed that up.
It's my belief that the vast majority of "opti problems" are icm problems or coil problems that get replaced with the opti for completeness.
In short, drive it when you want to and don't worry about it.
Thanks FAUEE, I drive it as much as possible, but never drive it in the rain, as back in 79 when I bought my first new one I totalled it due to slick roads and a little acceleration . 30mph is all it took sideways to wipe it out. of course back then the tires were not too snappy. thanks for the hit "live free or die"
unless you are driving it thought really deep water puddles in a hard driving rain. then rain wont hurt it at all. just don't wash your engine, and keep your coolant hoses in check.
Thanks nowhereman, no big deal as it NEVER sees rain we're talking a mint 93 inside outside, underneath and under the hood. Having had vettes since 79 i've always kept em stock and mint. With regards to washing the engine. I have several times call me lucky. What triggered my query were online comments regarding the optispark and a lot of other issue which I have not experienced with any of the 10 vettes that I've owned. Good old reliable chevrolet. Maintain em and they will treat you right. I've also had 3 xjs V12 jags and a couple of xj8 ragtops. Samething take care of them and they're awesome. Thanks again. " live free or die"

I hear Ya and usually I dry clean under the hood, keeping it in sweet condition. Long brushes, air pressure and then a dash of armor all. Boom like new. I'm a bit of a fanatic when it comes to my cars. So whenever I sell one... the buyer is getting a hell of a car. :=) as general john stark stated to the new hampshire congress. As a noob and potential buyer of a '96 GS is the Optispark an expensive repair? Seems the more I read, the more prevalent an issue it is. Given not as bad as the C6 ZO6's heads issue, but just looking ahead to gather as much info. as I can on my search for "my car".

Hi, I never had an issue with any of the c4's that I have owned, it was more just a question on my part as I like to keep the engine compartment spotless. The key is to not gunk and wash the engine without taking care to cover up the front portion of the engine if doing so. The c4's get a bad rap and I have had 10 vettes, 6 of them c4's 3 of them being brand new 84,5 and 6 and can tell you that they are a nice car for the dough! No matter what the guys with the new vettes say. Sure you'll have a few issues here and there but check the car over and make sure everything functions. Look for oil leaks and pay particular attention to the bose stereo if equipt. I'm replacing two amps in mine but no big deal for an awesome sound and original equipment. I'm pure stock and I like keeping them that way. Good luck. Live free or die

I have a 93 ordered new, nothing but problems.Have two spare opti. Can not pull a code it just started one day with back fireing now is hard to start when warm. I know of people who have had no problems but carry spare opti. A garage vehicle with out climate control has a tendency to rust the interior of the opti. I believe it is a matter of luck! When it does start acting up it will drive you nuts . The reason is because its an OB1 car and detiorating sensors are not shown on a scan. Got to go trying to trouble shoot fuse blowing Good Luck!
