One says the AC controls the second fan operation. I agree. BUT.......
As stated above, does the AC have some control over the primary fan? I didn't think so. AND.......
If the AC is inoperable (ie:Disconnected) will the second fan turn on through some switching device other than the AC?
I'm experiencing overheating in my 90. Completely flushed system with rebuilt heads, radiator cleaned, etc. My temp is going to the peg on occasion. But only one fan (primary) is cycling. The second fan, AC controlled, does not come on at all. AC system is discharged and compressor unplugged.
Make sure you have 50/50 anti-freeze/water to raise the boiling point. Make sure radiator shroud is clean. A/C running will cool the car by running the fan. My Fiero, which is a car known for running hot, would cool down to the lower operating temps with A/C on in scorching weather while in stop and go traffic. Maybe try a 160 deg. thermostat and a reprogram to turn the fan on sooner.
I use a 160 stat and I have toggle switches on BOTH fans. I turn on the primary at 175 and hit the second at 180 or if I go into traffic. Also ya might take a look at that rad cap because of the coolant going into the overflow jug............ :seeya
