The steering is Good straight ahead. When you have to turn the steering left or right it seems to bind. After the start of the turn, the bind goes away. Is this fixable?
The binding can be temporarily solved with a bottle of Lucas Oil PS conditioner most of the time. But your shaft in your unit is wearing out and the oil is seeping out of its respected paths. That's what the rebuilder told me. The fix is usually a metal sleeve inserted into the wall of the unit. You can try the lucas oil if you are in a pinch, but I think they are starting to sell rebuilds again on the various websites. A year ago no one had them. Not to hard to get it out.
Good Luck
I'll give it a try. I'm hoping it will last for another month. I do all my work and a little cooler would be nice.
Just beware mine stopped turning one way(with power assist) but I went a long while with it acting up. Frankly amazed he could sleeve it and it works almost with one finger turn.

Hello,
You can send your rack into us and we can rebuild it for you. A rebuild will allow for the rack to function properly!
Go to our website www.turnone-steering.com, under rebuilding services you will see pricing along with a rebuild form. Please include the form when you send it in. If you have questions regarding our rebuild services, you can call us at 1-877-GO-TURN1 and ask for Tech Support.
Mine had the same problem. When you start into a curve the effort was a little higher and then it was almost like it went past a detent, it would suddenly 'release' and make you jerk into the turn a little. Very nerve racking! The Lucas oil did help a little but it wasn't a fix. I changed the rack to a quick ratio from ZIP and it made a HUGE difference in the way the car drives. It goes exactly where I point it and quickly too. My only problem is I also put on a new pump from PepBoys. It works OK as long as the rpm is up a little, but in a parking lot or real slow turn, power suddenly goes away and it gets hard steer unless I rev it up a little.
Should have gone with the TURN-1 pump but I'm a cheap bastard and a slow learner too!
I'll try Lucas. I promised my Aunt that I would take her for a ride . She is 84. She is supposed to be here for a day in about 2 weeks. She wants the top down to. We will see... the car is only a Sunday driver. Hopefully everything works out.
So, not to get too far off topic, or hi-jack the thread.... but if you have a standard ratio, can you just replace it with a Z51 version without further modification?

Bolts right in, same as the standard rack. Don't remember what the ratio difference was now, but the new rack is definitely a faster ratio. Feels like it should have been that way from the factory anyway. The one that came in the car always seemed slow for a sporty/performance car, more like what you'd expect in a big Buick. If you look on the ZIP website, they tell what the difference is and I did the install in the driveway no problem.

The Lucas is good stuff and lasts, my rack was pretty far gone though. Lucas helps keep the seals from leaking too from what they say. I haven't ever had a Lucas product that didn't do exactly what they claim. They make good stuff!

I did one in the 93 Z28 I used to have... it was pretty easy... So I wont need a different pump with the Z51 option rack?
